Resize filters, about their quality, recommends!

Hi guys, I have one important question: is it matter which resize filter I use, Bilinear, Bicubic, Precise Bilinear, Precise Bicubic, or Lancos3.

Is Lancos3 best resize filter?

It also depends on whether you're going up or down and how far. Bilinear is the softest and lanczos is the most versatile.

For downscaling use Lanczosresize only

For upscaling use Bicubicresize with 0.45 to 0.6 sharpening.

This will avoid any artifacts and bring out good results.

PS: Dont use any other ver of lanczos's cos they cause artifacts

I disagree. Lanczos4 is a great upscaler. I use it on playback to 1280xwhatever - usually from anamorphic full res AVC. It is much more pleasing to my eyes than using the video card's bilinear/trilinear resizer.

I have yet to notice any artifacts.

For encoding though, I almost always use Lanczos. Only when upscaling when encoding (very rare) will I use Lanczos4. As far as downsizing, Bilinear is good for softer material, otherwise Lanczos.

Isn't LanczosResize(x,y) a Lanczos3 resize? IIRC it is...

I've always wanted to compare the results of DVD-720p from Lanczos4 and a high end hardware upscaler doing say DVD->720p. I bet the hardware units aren't THAT much better. Anyone have one / used one? Sorry if I'm getting a little OT.

SimpleResize is really bilinear resize with slight different scale definition.

for upsizing with factors > than 1.5 I use

eedi2().turnleft().eedi2().turnright().bicubicresize()

when I want to get smooth diagonal edges.

From where I may download Lancos4 resize filter? And, what's the difference between Lancos3 and Lancos4?

I noticed that newest DivX 6.22 encoder have Lancos4 resize filter!

About Bicubic filter, I need explanation in which case I should use him.

And, last question: Are lancos4 will always be first choice of you, guys, even for anime video?

Ranked in terms of sharpness:
Bilinear, Bicubic, Spline16, Lanczos, Lanczos4, Spline36.

The main difference between Lanczos & Lanczos4 is the latter is slightly sharper but causes slightly more ringing (aka haloing), much like spline16 vs spline36. Spline has less ringing but is somewhat slower.

Both Gauss and Bicubic can be tuned to anywhere from point resize to very soft and blurry, however, by changing their parameters (b & c in bicubic, p in gauss).

All of these are included in avisynth 2.56+.
