How do I clean up VHS captures?

Hey Guys,
im a newbie to video capturing, i have recently bought a DVD recorder and so ive hooked it up to my VHS player so i can capture some old VHS films.
This has gone fine and ive copied the movies onto my PC - now the question i have is
1) Is there anything i can do to clean up the picture quality
2) Is there anything i can do to clean up the audio?

As i say im a newbie so please be gentle wid me.

Yes, thats why we are here but your asking about something that is not that easy to learn. At this point forget about "Avisynth". Start with Virtualdub(Mpeg2) and the right plugins.

It says not only about capture, but also how to cleanup some videos using avisynth. But maybe you should follow what rfmmars says, go to VirtualDub.
