XviD Video Dots

Hello all,

First of all thanks for making the forum possible, i realy learnt a lot here allready.
However i have a question and hope someone understands what i mean to say. English is not my native language so i'll try to do my best.

My Situation :

Some days agow after i have updated my video drivers from Nvidia version 84.21.
I was so happy to finaly see that the video quality is as good as i had with the early tool TVTool.
Normally the blak borders where grey color but now Nvidia did it and made them perfect black like it should be in 16:9 movies.

However the color spectrum is still very dark. It seems that all my DivX and Xvid movies are very hard to watch on my CRT IIyama monitor.
If i up the brightness the quality seems to degrees and makes the picture more grey'ish then intenser in color.
However i can live with this, if anyone here knows how to overcome this problem would be nice though.

Then i loaded Xvid Codec. and installed DivXG400 (Filter) I do this cause i then have easy control over my subtitles and the very great Aspect ration setting.
This filter i realy liked.
Then i have set to display the picture / full screen device on tv screen, wich is secondary device.

The movies starts playing and i turn off my monitor and watch the movie in my living room on a sony normal screen TVset via S-Video.

Perfect. Now, here comes my problem, so now and then i see black and white dots vertical in the middle and later in the right corner of the picture.

It looks like it is a movie of the old days in the 70ties. However i have the same problem with DVD and Divx. So, not only Xvid.
I know the Xvid is good quality, well i hope.

Later i decided to test it without the DivxG400 filter, this seems to help the dots were less visable. But now i did not have the option to have a wide screen video atleast play at 16:9. I was happy to overcome this by installing FFdshow codec. Overlay hardware mixer made it look the same good aspect as with G400.

However i think my cpu needs more cycles then with DivXg400But i had no choice, cause i had less dots now.

Then i decided to re set my Ghost Image and installed Chipset AGP driver of SIS DX.
Have in my BIOS AGP Arpenture to 256 / to the max.
Have in my BIOS UC to UCIS ? Sorry do not remember the name bit this is for the video cache i think
Have in my BIOS AGP set to Fastwrites. No idea if this should be off (My motherboard is ASUS P4S533-E SIS Chipset)

Reset the Image. Installed Chipset AGP driver. Installed Nvidia 84.21 drivers. Set all to Max acceleration.
Reboot.

The only thing i change is set the flikker filter to max for tv. Have video connection to auto scan = S-Video. Have TV set to Netherlands PAL B. And have fullscreen video play on secondary device.
The rest is al standard settings.

Now i only use FFDSHow the version of 8 Mei 2006. I use this for Xvid and Divx and have audio decoding done by it aswell and even my subs. I found out how to get a better aspect ratio by turning on output overlat mixer. This works great.

In Windows Media player i have acceleration on standart. So not set to high quality in the overlay settings. No idea if i have to change this to have lower CPU useage.

Now, when i see this movie.. it is almoste gone.. but still i can see now and then the with dots / little - types. So it looks like noise, scredges?

Is there anyone that knows how i can overcome this:

1. Having realy to dark video

2. Need to change any bios setting agp fastwrites or has nothing to do with video playback

3. Need to change any setting in windows media player 10 in the acceleration to have better performance in overlay mixer settings while using ffdshow hardware overlay?

4. The dots scredges, noise in video.. is this a normal thing even with DVD playback. Or do i need to use the normal Xvid or need better tweaking in FFdshow. Note : I have not set any options in ffdshow i even have postporcessing off. Only use the Libavcodec to encode the xvid thats all.


Would be realy nice if someone here could help me out with these things.

Btw, i have no dots in my 2D desktop view. It realy is only when the video is running.
Alsow my 2D Desktop is not dark at all.


My System:

Asus p4s533-e bios 1008
P4 cpu
XFX Gforce 6600 GT 128 MB VRam AGP 8X
( it is in a 4X AGP slot, but it has worked allways)
( It has a power plug into it with extra power from my PSU)

There are many informations here, so I got a little lost:
Are the dots/lines only present with TV-display, or are they here on your CRT monitor.

Try alternative playback software as Media Player Classic, BSPlayer, etc. I'm not really promoting them here, but I think they're used a lot here and you could find more help with them.

About the brightness: its level depend on the monitor and the video card. You should increase it (on the monitor or in the video card display property page: overlay settings) to a level you find comfortable to watch. It's normal to see more "bad details" of your encodings when brigthness is too high.

However i have the same problem with DVD and Divx. So, not only Xvid.
You said it: not only XviD related. Maybe a moderator will move your thread in a more appropriate place.

For replying.
The white lines / dots are in the video playback. You can see them on the monitor CRT and on TV.

Maybe this is caused by CPU spikes, no idea.
The less codecs i use the better the quality.

So only ffdshow now.
I knwo it is a bit hard to explain my thing, dont worry if i am souding a bit complicated sorry for that.

These are white of color and appear in the Xvid.
I did not have this before with medua player but if you say BSplayer is better fot video i wil test that one.

No, I won't say it's better... It's just that I never use Windows Media Player and so don't know it... and I think Media Player Classic is widely used here.

The less codecs i use the better the quality
Can you explain this, I'm not sure to understand.

Do these dots/lines appear when you open your file in a software like VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod? Or only when playing them back?

When you pause the playback, are they still there, on the displayed picture?
If yes, could you post snapshots (Both MediaPlayerClassic and BSPlayer can do that). You can use this site to upload pictures:

Also, try another player: VLC (VideoLAN), that uses, IIRC, another way to display the video.



I would say:
- if the dots are present in VirtualDub(mod) -> they're 'in' the encoded file
- if they are only present in Media Player -> it could be related to the DirectShow rendering
- if they are present while playing back with VLC too, it would be related to your graphic card (drivers?)

Anyone could confirm the 'diagnosis'?

Hi Jon,

Sorry it took so long for my replying.

However i think i have found what causes this wierd dotted problem.


The new video driver 85.98 Whq is better then 91.x so i changed it back to 85. to have better control over AR and screen etc.
Problems TV out are known for 91.x series.

My TV is Europe so PAL.


After i reset my system (Ghost)

When i install DivX (the new one) without anything ALL goes oke.

When i resize in the divx console to 16:9 it all goes oke aswell.

Then i Unregister DivX and try to use the beloved FFDshow.
I have the New version 2006 ( i gues April? 8 )

I register the filter and all goes well.

Now, when i use the hardware overlay and wnat to have a better AR and greater vieuw on my 4:3 TV PAL It will happen.

So i have found out if i resized it with FFDshow the decoding can make some noise / dots very little and quick by can be very irritating.

If i use DivG400 *Filter* together with FFDshow (2006) i think it will happen aswell cause of the DivXG400 Filter changes the aspect ratio. (Have not tested it but it did this before as i can remember)

The only output i have is Hardware overlay, and the one below that.

P.s. As you can see i register the filter manualy. Sure i could install, but manual works for me as well and a bit faster.

I have set it to :

Expand next muliple of : 128

If i set it to : 32 ALL dots are gone, but my video is a bit to small.

I could use DivX alone the new one is realy great, but than i still need vobsub or DivxG400 Filters for my Subs.
FFDshow having do all this is far better.

However, it was not on. The option was selected like in you picture. But visualisations was not thicked / selected.


Here is a little test:

Hardware is XFX Geforce 6600 GT AGP 128 MB DDR

AGP is used in a 4 X slot. I do not have 8 X yet, however anyone told me this is not a big problem.

It has power feeded to a seperate powerline.

The motherboard i have -

ASUS P4S533-E SIS.


The Test :


When i install Nvidia Driver version 81.85 i have NO problems at all.

E.g. i install ffdshow no problem
i register and setup .ax ffdshow no problems

a bit futher..

i install DivxG400 filter cause of the perfect Aspect Ratio and Crop options.

Fill screen 80 % ! NO Problem! (Normaly now i say a lot of white dots on the side of the movy or in teh middel)

1 problem this driver had bad TV out colors. The version afther this one i used is 85.98 <--

This version gives you the nice video out put. Nice black - black not gray on tv and more vivid colors.

(Like the old days with TVTool could)
I loved TVTool but cannot use it with my Card cause of the integrated TV chip.

So realy wierd is 81.85 works, but bad color and gray / old TV out style.

85.98 best TV out and controleable (91.x - drama) and great vivid colors nice screan filling (nog white light screan pull, so the image would bend on a lot of color) Perfect.

However -
If i use this with DivXG400 Filters and crop set AR i would see the errors in the frames of the XviD.

- - -- -- -- (But then vertical)

Looks like those old movies know what i mean?

So what this tells me is that between driver 81.85 and 85.98 some programmer has made the support for vivid colors on TV out BUT it gives frame interferance. And very noticeable when i expand / crop etc the Image.

This happends with ffdshow and with the filter Divg400.ax. the filter you see it more often though.

No i did not install AGP sis driver. I could but i can not believe this is the problem.

BIOS is still at normal level. Standard setup. Fast Writes some say to turn it of for my board (SIS) no idea if this helps. Maybe only for games.

So gues this is a hard thing to beat. What i can do i finding the first driver after 81.85 with has the Tv vivid color support (hope you understand what i mean)

So i have to test from 81.85 till 85.98 (Werkt) and find one that is the first vivid and works.

BTW, if i expand the image with DivX Hardware Overlay. It gets out of AR i know, But there is NO problem with the image.

Hardware overlay in the XviD itself does not give a problem on resize. But the aspect i never seem to get correct. That is why i use DivXg400. If that is bad i like to hear from you.

As it seems to be a driver-related issue, you should directly contact the manufacturer.

If the main problem that bother you is the quality of the TV output with the old driver version, you should use this old version (as there are no playback bug) and then tweak the brightness/gamma/colors options in the video card properties page or in FFDSHow. I'm sure you can get those vivid colors and deep dark by doing this (try using the FFDShow levels too).

I did what you explained and yes the colors is mutch better now.
However because of this image that is better with the old drivers from nvidia i can see the dots comming back again.

They are black, some white but moste are black dots.


In ffdshow there is an option :

Perspective Correction. (I have not turned it on)

But if you read there:

This filter is in developement: black dots may appear in picture.

Maybe i have the same problem even without it.

again, the dots appear when i turn on DivxG400 filter 2.83

The old versions do not seem to work.

The reason why i use (like to use) DivxG400 filter is because of the easy aspect ratio correction / crop etc.

I just set to fill the screen vertical and horizontal to 100% and i have 4:4 full screen video with correct aspect.
In month i am not able to do this with ffdshow to my knoledge.

I can expand but then the ratio is not correct and i still see the black bars.

I must tell you something:

Before i bought the Geforce 6600 GT AGP i had Geforce MX440. Never had any problems with this one and used it with TVTool cause of the special TV chip by conaxiant.

Later i bought the XFX Geforce 6600 GT AGP i thought it would be better.


When i install windows from the start with no video drivers (detonator) i have to set the Video acceleration all the way to low. (Off)

The reason is the screen update is very very slow, it seems that my pc runs to slow on screen update.

If acc. is OFF all is oke.

When i come in windows i see dots or lines appear when i open a window and close it.
But i did not mind cause it is gone when i install Nvidia drivers and set the acceleration to Full again.

This thing has never happend to my old video card at all.

I tought maybe i have not a good power supplie. Or maybe my motherboard SIS is getting to old etc.
No idea yet.

I realy like to by a new system some day, but i try to find out what cuases this problem. Cause if it IS nvidia i will not buy the 6600 GT (pci-e) then for my new system.

i am sorry for this long post. i think it is realy to hard to solve maybe.

I would like to know what people have. so when i buy new hardware that i know for sure it is great components together.

Maybe SIS chipset has problems with Geforce 6600,. no idea.
Fast writes (AGP) on or off does not make any differance.


However again thanks for helping. if you see somthing in this post that needs my attention then let me know if you want to.
If not, i understand it is a bit to hard for me to solve and i just have to look for maybe new hardware.

Or send mail to the maker of DivXG400 maybe he knows why this happends with his filter.
However it is only when i load this filter.

I wich there was something like Grapedit (audio) but then for Video. So i could see what happends and where it happends. Then i could see if it is hardware software media player or the filter.

I test it in MPC had it happends there aswell. I have tested in Windows Media player 10 with overlay on and with high quality mode.

No idea what high quality mode is. but i think it gives the same errors.

I don't get it, did you mean Graphedit ? If so, graphedit works with audio AND video ...

Have you overclocked your system? Lines / dots appeared to me when I tried to overclock my old graphics card. Or your gpu cooler might be failing. Do you get these dots when (/if) you play games? You could try to check the nvidia drivers settings and take all video playback accelrations off.
