DVD Shrink is able to read the any DVD fine if it's already ripped on the hard drive or if the DVD is in an internal dvd drive.

Since I mainly use a laptop now and have external drives I am getting frustrated with Shrink.

As soon as I try to read the DVD from an external DVD writer in a firewire enclosure, I get the error "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue, The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I have AnyDVD on so it's not structural. I have tried more than one external DVD. More than one DVD title and even tried via USB 2.0.

Same result. Seems like DVD Shrink can't read a DVD from an external DVD writer.

Anyone had that problem? Is this a known problem? Is there a fix?

Obviously once the DVD is ripped on the hard drive, DVD Shrink can read the files fine, but still I liked the one clicked and forget it aspect before I encountered that problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Sure it can.

The I/O error means it doesn't like something about the disc. Try updating the firmware and Nero (only up to Nero 6.6.0.18) due to Shrink not working with Nero 6.6.1.4.

I tried several original discs. Also, I don't burn with Nero and disable it in Shrink. Still if Nero is the lastest version can it be the cause?

Are you sure that "AnyDVD" is able to work, or is working, in conjunction with your external drive?

It should because the drive is recognized by AnyDVD. I have to admit I'm baffled because if I use cloneDVD, CloneDVD does the job with that drive no problem.

You might want to try a simple experiment, as follows:

Put the to-be-ripped DVD in your external drive. Use DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4, with I/O interface set to "Elby CDIO", together with Any DVD to try and rip the DVD. If AnyDVD is properly accessing the drive, the DVD Decrypter log should show all "N/A"s regarding "Key" data...

Yep it does. One thing I have found out though. If I use DVD Decrypter to rip it does but really slow.
If I use AnyDVD built in ripper it does the DVD real fast. Same thing with Clone DVD....real fast.

Why would DVDShrink can't read the disk, DVD Decrypter can but real slow and 2 other software can real fast....I don't understand.

I'm not an AnyDVD user, so this question may sound a bit silly - Are you sure that DVD Shrink can operate properly together with AnyDVD?

Yes. When I had my desktop and my drives were internal I was using both together and everything was peachy.

it's not the end of the world. I can still rip and use DVD rebuilder pro if I want. I just miss the one click and forget it option that dvdshrink provided without ripping the DVD first to my HD when I was in a hurry.
