Interlaced DVD encoding

Well, maybe this ins not the right place. If not, sorry for that:

I have The lion King Special Edition DVD. It is a Full Interlaced Pal DVD and i have a few Questions:

In Avisynth, wich deinterlacing method is recommended and why (just include a link to a post if it was already discussed)

It´s possible preserve the interlaced structure and encode the video as interlaced and perform the deinterlacind during playback like a normal MPG2 (DVD)?

This can be done in X264 with the actual support for interlaced encoding, or i should wait? Maybe with Xvid?

How configure x264 for that (or Xvid)?

Leak Kernel Deint is fast and good quality.

MVBob is all quality, little speed.

Use Megui with the analyse algorithym, it will choose the best combination for you.

Why keep interlaced? Just do the progressive encoding as one step, and forget about the rest. It is easier for everyone.

There isn't really a good solution for interlaced encoding and decoding yet but if you wait a bit I believe AVC will get there.

For now my vote also goes to leakkernelbob (http://gast3.ssw.uni-linz.ac.at/~kp/AviSynth/LeakKernelDeint/LeakKernelDeintHelp.html) for real interlaced content if you want to keep the motion smoothness.

If it's a movie, do the ivtc, same if it's just some tv drama or game show. If it's a tv show with a lot of movement, like sports or a cop show, interlaced is cheaper and faster than a full bob and looks better (bobbed on playback) than deinterlaced (although it does need more bitrate than 30p or it'll look worse).

Anyway: In xvid just enable interlaced encoding on the main config page. x264's interlacing is still in the first alpha stages and I'm not sure if builds are out with it yet.

I guess that DVD is not fully interlaced, but flagged as interlaced. As... "it is very common for PAL movie DVDs to be flagged as interlaced even though they are actually progressive."[/i]

if you want to be sure that something's interlaced, just step through random parts of the movie. if you see any interlace, it's interlaced.

assuming interlaced is pretty good encoding policy for DVDs, as on most hardware setups it's nearly impossible to be sure something's actually progressive (without stepping through a field at a time on the tape deck, and even then the deck might not be reporting the right frame/field on its timecode display). so this means most DVDs will be encoded as interlaced regardless of what the content is. same deal with DVB.

considering this is a Disney release, and a "special edition" one of that, you can assume they've done a good progressive transfer for PAL land. disney don't mess around (unless it's studio ghibli stuff redistributed through disney, in which case they don't really care. thankfully disney don't handle ghibli stuff in PAL land).

if you want to be sure that something's interlaced, just step through random parts of the movie. if you see any interlace, it's interlaced. That is not a reliable way because it can misdiagnose phase-shifted progressive video as interlaced. You need to separate the fields and step through them, as I have described many times.

OK THIS IS very Interesting:
if i use winDVD the video looks interlaced, if i use dgindex, the same.

But if i open one vob with mplayer or mpc+ffdshow It LOOKS OK (progresive) and yes, deinterlacing is off.

You are Right, 2 fields are the same picture, then came 2 more ( same picture) an again. (sorry for my english if im saying something wrong)

This method is easy and precise.
