View Full Version : Max Bitrate for HC Encoder

Hello, all!
I was just curious if there's an obvious way to change the max bitrate setting when using HC Encoder. I'm using DVD-RB Pro 1.09.3. :thanks:

You can use the hidden setting "max_bitrate" in the INI file, but I recommend against it. DVD Rebuilder sets that value based upon some very important information. Increasing it creates a risk of causing non-compliant streams and video stuttering.

Thank you, once again, J!
I was actually thinking of lowering it to about 8500. When using HC I find that occassionally the disc will 'sputter' in certain places where the bitrate gets high (too high?). Slight pauses are noticed (with the sound as well) during these moments... there's usually a lot of action on-screen at the time.
The funny part is that it doesn't occur on every player. It plays just fine on 2 pioneer units, but not on a couple of others. It's really odd.
Have I been misguided in my thinking?

If you look in the REBUILDER.ECL file you'll probably find that the maximum bitrate is lower than that on most encodes anyway. The maximum video bitrate has to be reduced for each audio stream that is included because the combination of video, audio, subpictures, and overhead cannot exceed 10.08Mbs. In addition DVD Rebuilder further limits the maximum to no more than the peak bitrate found in the original stream.

You are not misguided in your thinking. I have the same problem with HC espicialy HC17-18. I just did not know how to report it. However I reencode the same movie with HC15 beta and there was no problem. So if you can get a hold of HC15 you can try it.

This is a direct quote from another thread, but I think hank315 is already aware of our issue:
"@Dashiell
The last releases of HC don't use 3 B-frames.
I tried 3 B-frames in one of the test releases of HC016 but as Mug Funky already mentioned it's not DVD-compliant so it was dumped. Seems the total bitrate is just too high for some players. The autogop behaviour didn't really change in HC018 (but it will in HC019)."
:thanks:
