View Full Version : Any way to make Matroska filters take over *only* .mkv files?

A seemingly dumb question, I know, but hear me out.

This probably just has to do with my system's codec chains and such (and area of the system registry that I am vaguely aware of but obviously know little about), but when I install the Matroska filters [Lite Pack] (http://packs.matroska.org), Matroska also takes over my MPEG files and DVDs as well.

I realize--correct me if I'm wrong--MKV is just a container format and is not an actual video codec, but after installing the filter pack, both my mpgs and DVDs no longer get processed by my NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder (http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html). (Don't cringe, but I actually prefer using WMP as my default MPEG/DVD player [:p], so please don't suggest MPC. I already have it installed; I just don't like it.) So I speculate that by installing the Matroska filter pack, it somehow modified the codec chain (or whatever) so that now some other mpeg decoder is being called instead.

So bottom line, is there any other (reputable) light-weight Matroska filter pack out there that will allow me to view .mkv files in WMP but leave my .mpg files alone?

Have you already uninstalled it and had your old associations restored? If so, you should only need Haali's filter, and ffdshow & vsfilter if desired.

you acturally need "matroska splitter" instead of "matroska package"

Well, considering I made it abundantly clear I'm a n00b at this, a link or something would have been appreciated, guys. ;) (As you experts know, blindly googling the internet and then installing stuff is a risky endeavor.)

All I know is that when need to view the few .mkv files I have, I need to install that Matroska Pack I linked to earlier. (Actually, the very first time I tried, I uninstalled some "Lazyman's Matroska Pack," the results were the same.)

When I'm done viewing the files, I just uninstall the pack. I've had to do this four or five times now.

matroska pack is coming with ffdshow decoder, coming with many decoders for many different formats, including MPEG, etc. . If you don't want to have this, just get the matroska lite pack from http://packs.matroska.org . Its just the MKV splitter and no decoder for any video codec ...

Googling Haali always picks up his main page (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/). If you get matroska lite, you'll get an older and buggier version of Haali's splitter.

If you read my post, you'll find that I am already using that. That's the problem! :p

Okay, I'll check it out. Thanks!

Quick Update: Haali's media splitter seems to work perfectly! Thank you ever so much!!! :)
