Wintv Capture board (1998) needs software

The goal of using this is to capture VHS
from a VHS player to a digital file, preferably AVI
for use with such programs as Nero Vision Express
to record to dvd.


I'm a noob at doing any of this.

Please tell what I need to get this thing going.

So far I have used the product number to find
and download the driver.zip for the device.


Open source or freeware progs only will be used with
this device. Please tell where such programs for this
device might be obtained.


I will check in with the Haupague site to see if
I can learn anything there.

Well I am back with the Haupaugue (pronounced 'hop-hog')
card installed.


I'll get to the guide but the immediate question is getting
the bt848.inf installed on the Win98 computer.

This is giving me fits.


I've read the screen instructions and I have located the
bt848 in c:\windows\temp.

It refuses to go in.

thinking I was not typing it right, I but the driver on a floppy
and tried it from a:

Still no install. What is up with that?

My hardware is about as old as the card:

Tyan Trinity motherboard
Celeron 400 mhz cpu
384 mem
Matrox Millenium vid card


This is my scratch machine that I'm trying out the old
card in.


So I'm getting the 'new hardware installed' message over
and over again.


Is there a self-extracting version of the driver or other solution to this?

which millenium video card is it?
years ago I had one, too but its video abilities were far too bad (no proper overlay and stuff!)

The Millenium card is junk, I got it from the resale
store Computer Renaissance when I was having vid
card problems and needed to test if the problem
was video.


Final install can be put into my current build:


MachSpeed Xcaliber
Celeron 2.93
512 mem
PNY Geforce 5500
Benq 1620


... but the goal of this job is to simply transfer a vhs tape
from an inexpensive player onto the small hd on the
old box in a file format preferably .avi to burn to dvd.
The content is an old documentary that is pretty rare.


Can I do this on the older setup? Older setup gives me room to do lots of replugging as necessary.

you'll need at least 10 to 20 Gigabytes per hour of Video with MJPEG compression and about 35 to 40 GB/hour with lossless compression.

But 400 MHz will not be fun capturing video.
You'll need a lot of tweaking that may drive you insane.

Better use a reasonably faster machine for capturing. At least 800 MHz to 1 GHz but with Win9x.
NT Systems produce too much processing overhead compared to 9x systems.

I am a total noob at this but it sounds like I
should move the card over to my 2.93 Ghz machine with
120G drive on it.


What did people do with these things back in 1998 when
no one had large drives?


Does the guide mentioned earlier have a graphic for
hookups of this stuff?

There's also a sound card connection on there plus IR and

Ok, I am back.


The headache with the driver will have to wait until I know for
sure if the card is recognized by system.

The card could not be found in device manager.

What heading is it under if not sound and multimedia devices?


As another check on the device I reinstalled the card in my newer build (see above.) I am still not finding it.


The startup prompts show a new device found, but the
new device cannot be found Device Mgr.


Am I missing something?


With the card installed, I am now going to use the
sourceforge link above to see if that can install the WINTv
driver properly.

I made another check by going


start > settings > control panel > multimedia and looking
at the devices and codecs in there. Still no Haupague.


This card must be dead even though it is found in startup.

If that is the case, what is the best deal card to do capture that you can recommend here? Are there generics which come in below the cost of an ATI All in one or other off shelf branded capture card?

Hello? (thump, thump) Is this thing on?

Anyway, locally I saw some low end capture boards like
Dazzle and such but ALL of them were for XP only.

Who using Win98 on here and what board have you found
to work with it? My machine specs are further back in the
thread.

Also are there any tips for giving another try at getting
my old Hauphauge (whatevs) card recognized? It can't
be dead if it's seen at startup. I'm going to give it another whirl.

I've been whirling since I wrote last in here.

Today the adapter I needed to connect composite from vhs player to s-video at the hauppauge card arrived.

No joy however (and this is somewhat of a crosspost.)

My connect from composite to s-video using the adapter
gives a green screen in the avi capture preview with the
current version of Virtual Dub on Win98SE.

At least with RFI connected previously, I got some picture.


Is there some setting I am missing to kick in video with
this type of connection? My audio is hooked up direct to the
sound card and that works fine.

I have also consulted with the Vdub forum on a couple issues
but still haven't gotten a simple image capture with sound as an avi of anything from my source vhs tape.

Try this.

Go to http://www.dscaler.org/downloads.htm and download Dscaler 4.1.15 and use it to record instead of BTWincap or Vdub. It gives a much better picture IMHO.

Ok I'll do that and hopefully be able then to select that from
the 'device' menu of Vdub.


Should I be doing anything on the old machine (est 1998
vintage) to flash/upgrade the BIOS for performance purposes?



The composite to s-video connection, as mentioned, has
taken away what picture I had. Also and of unknown
importance was that the preview screen went from blue
in the RF mode to green in the s-video mode.

No error issued, just didn't get any picture with this hookup.
Is there any troubleshooting to do?
