MSU MPEG-2 Video Decoders Comparison

The main goal was to comparatively evaluate quality of MPEG-2 decoders while decoding distorted streams. This question is topical for satellite broadcasting (poor weather conditions, or satellite signal) and, to a lesser degree, for DVD video playback (scratched DVD disk).

Main idea:
We prepared damaged stream and decompressed this stream with every tested decoder (so decoders was compared on the same damaged stream). Such comparison was done 100 times for every error probability to received reliable results.

This was "small" comparison to test new methodology. We plan more extended comparisons this year.

We try to find similar comparisons (when codecs compared on broken data). If anybody know such comparisons - please let us know!

ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder (libavcodec)
why not also compare with libmpeg2, wich is also in Media Player Classic(although it's only based on it) ?
I find it very clean and fast. I hoped it was in the comparison, but libavcodec's performances are as much interesting. :)

I am woundering Sir why this comparison does not encluded four of the famoust widely used decoders :
Sonic cinemaster(Cineplayer)
Gabest MPV (MPC internal decoder)
Nvidia Purevideo Decoder
ATI MPEG2 Video Decoder

This comparison is a year old. Last year, ATI Mpeg2 was still bugging out left and right. I am not quite sure about the others, but I do remeber that ATI was not a very strong contender.

Good idea. We have no financing to provide this comparison very often, but we plan regulary update them.

In March 2007 we published updated comparison of lossless codecs for example. Also we organize annual H.264 codec's comparison.
