MSU MPEG-2 Video Decoders Comparison
The main goal was to comparatively evaluate quality of MPEG-2 decoders while decoding distorted streams. This question is topical for satellite broadcasting (poor weather conditions, or satellite signal) and, to a lesser degree, for DVD video playback (scratched DVD disk).
Main idea:
We prepared damaged stream and decompressed this stream with every tested decoder (so decoders was compared on the same damaged stream). Such comparison was done 100 times for every error probability to received reliable results.
See comparison chart:
http://www.compression.ru/video/codec_comparison/images/scheme_eng.png
Tested decoders:
* bitcontrol MPEG-2 Video Decoder
* DScaler MPEG2 Video Decoder
* Elecard MPEG-2 Video Decoder
* ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder (libavcodec)
* InterVideo Video Decoder
* Ligos MPEG Video Decoder
* MainConcept MPEG Video Decoder
* Pinnacle MPEG-2 Decoder
See all detailes on comparison page (http://www.compression.ru/video/codec_comparison/mpeg-2_2006_en.html). All results are presented in PDF (2Mb) (http://www.compression.ru/video/codec_comparison/pdf/msu_mpeg_2_decoder_comparison_2006_eng.pdf).
This was "small" comparison to test new methodology. We plan more extended comparisons this year.
Enjoy! :)
