DVD won't play

Don't know if anyone has ever seen this problem before. I got the movie hostle the other night. I put it into my girlfriends computer. When I press play movie it goes through all the copyright stuff, then when it reaches title 1 it jumps to chapter 26. It does this in media player classic and windows media player. When I click the timeline to jump back to the beginning it the programs lock up. When I tried nero showtime, it won't jump ahead, but the video and audio don't play, just black silence, but the time ticks normally. I took it back to the store but the replacement copy does the same thing and it works in other computers.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

for giggles you could try opening it with PGC edit on the same computer and see what it gives you using trace mode.

I don't know off hand what the problem is, I have never heard of one quite like it before. But mess around with the program above and see what happens. Be sure to post back.

it works in other computers.This would indicate that the problem lies with your girlfriend's computer hardware - and not the DVD itself.

But, just out of curiosity, if you can install a dedicated software DVD player, such as WinDVD or PowerDVD on your girlfriend's system, see if the purchased DVD then plays properly using one of these players...

Sounds more like it's either an old version of MPC, an old version of ffdshow/dscaler, or some crappy OEM mpeg2 decoder with the highest merit. Try uninstalling all the crappy OEM dvd players and installing a recent ffdshow or dscaler, that should fix it.

Pooon, you want to watch a movie with your girlfriend, on the PC? I don't know of any movie simply named Hostile. But, it doesn't sound like a title I'd pick to watch with my girlfriend. Dude, I think you have a lot bigger problems to worry about than a DVD that won't play on one computer. :)

Here are some choices:
1) Use her DVD player attached to the TV.
2) Back up the DVD, sans the garbage, and try the backup.
3) Install new software on her computer, as instructed.
4) Get "You've Got Mail" instead.

Hostel. The one about the Euro road trip that went bad. :p But it played fine on both my PCs back when I rented it, so it's not a disc thing, like he noticed.
