View Full Version : Is 64-bit support planned?

Hello,

Hopefully Jdobbs will see this, since there's nothing like going straight to the creator of a program for a good answer! :)

Some time ago, I had pretty much given up on the idea of Windows X64 because driver support was a bit shakey and most programs were in the 32-bit realm, anyway. Now that I see driver support becoming much more availible (and when I built my editing systems, I had vied for using AMD64 processors to allow what I'd hoped was maximum upgrading flexibility), I was wondering if there are any plans to support the 64-bit environment within DVD Rebuilder. For example, http://okejl.dk/dunstan/ lists several 64-bit applications which we're all fairly familiar with in their 32-bit counterparts. What would be the possible ramifications of trying some of these within DVD Rebuilder? Sure, I know that they aren't officially supported, but is there any reason why they wouldn't interact well within the existing shell of Rebuilder and add some degree of enhancement to a system running in a X64 environment?

Also realizing that most of the time Rebuilder spends on a backup is totally dependant on the encoder (all of which that at least I'm aware of are 32-bit), would the entire idea simply be overkill at this point?

Any and all input from other users is, as always, deeply appreciated! But what's your take, Jdobbs?

I am not Jdobbs, obviously, but I think that he would only transfer to 64 bit when all of the programs that are required to run DVD-RB to it's full extent are ported 64 bit.

Exactly. Of the time it takes to do a backup only about 20 minutes is actually spent by DVD Rebuilder (in the PREPARE and REBUILD) phases. The vast majority of the remaining time is spent waiting for the encoder to complete each segment (in the ENCODE phase). So even if porting to 64 bit cut the time in half (which is very unlikely) it would only cut the backup time by 10 minutes or so.

@All

Thanks for the feedback! I know that my enthusiam for pushing on to the "next big thing" is probably overwhelming the practicality of the idea (come to think of it, isn't that very idea the one that pushes technology forward?) but I do appreciate the input from those who actually know this stuff. That's what makes this forum great!

And I would add that probably most of the time in the Rebuild phase is being spent reading and writing to the HD
