Best Settings to capture in DivX?

What are the best settings to capp in DivX?
and can I use the FFDShow Encoder for that?

Our Capture FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=32575) Qs 13-14-15 cover a discussion of direct capture to MPEG-4, such as DivX.

It is not recommended.

That stated, it is still possible, and there is some guidance for capture in the old DivX Guide.

I capture to divx since I have a small hard drive (only have like 10gb free right now :( )

What I use:
virtualVCR
divx505pro

divx settings:
interlaced encoding: yes
encoding speed: fastest
preprocessing: none (as long as I can help it)
bi-directional encoding: no
1pass quality based: 93%

I normally capture at 480x480, 640x480 is too iffy for my P4 2.4ghz processor (occational frame drops).

divx505 is one of the few codecs I have that is fast enough to use for capture. With those settings I can normally get almost 2 hours of capture time in my limited space, with good-enough-for-my-needs quality.

Use whatever encoder you want, just keep an eye on your CPU usage and dropped frames (cause you don't want any dropped)

but I have a problem..
my videos are having too much blocks..
and I use the FFDShow Encoder..
cuz it has more options (denoise, soften ect.)

ey i just got a tv card to record the world cup too. :D

i know a lot of ppl recommend huffyyuv and mjpeg for recording but i have niether enough space nor hdd bandwidth to record using either of them.
so i record using xvid at 3000 Kbps (i know its a lot but its still far less then huffyyuv). try that. then recompress it to whatever codec you like (xvid or x264 for me)

btw. what program your using. the program with my pixle view playtv pro2 suycked so i am currently on the trial version of christv. i has these compression options too and a schduler.

its a all-in video programm, cutting, converting and capturing and some more stuf..

use the latest divx-encoder (6.25.17), it is very fast for a mpeg4-encoder

use ffdshow as a filter in VirtualVCR, not as an encoder or,

if You don't need ffdshow-filter(divx also has some build-in-Filters) use latest Virtual-Dub(MPEG2) 1.6.15 as capt.-software.

But again: the main thing for capturing directly into mpeg4 is a very clean Video-source-quality (and last but not least a fast computer!)

What settings do you use?

In practice, my P4E 3.4 Ghz can handle these Divx 6.5 settings:
- One pass quality based: 3
- Balanced mode
- Keep resolution (720x576 input)
- Desinterlace (if I don't select this, I get bad horizontal lines)
- MPEG2 filter gives me best results
- No motion improvement filters can be enabled for live capture with these settings

My biggest issue is output size, sometimes two big, and I have to reencode in two passes enabling motion compensation filters. If I choose lower resolutions, the motion correction can be enabled.

Anyone can help with a good advice to achieve good live quality captures, at reasonable output size, and without being obliged to reencode later

Also, what is the recommended resolution for a capture aimed to be watched on TV via a divx standalone player.

And is there any advantage to capture in full resolution 720x576 whan my card permitts it. I only noticed these big sized captures are better viewed on computer screen. Later, on a HDTV screen, will it make a difference the capture size?
