Default Audio & Subtitle Streams?

Hello, all!

I just purchased DVD-RB Pro yesterday! I've managed to make one "movie only" backup using the HC encoder. The one question I have (and I have done forum searches for this) is about the new feature to set default streams.

I was able to double-click and 'x' out the streams I didn't want, but I couldn't find any area to set any of the remaining ones as 'default'. I'm a newbie with RB, so please bear with me.

It was a Japanese film with both Jap and Eng sountracks. I wanted it to play the Jap soundtrack with eng subs as default, but I left the english audio track in for my brother who just can't deal with subs, if you catch my drift! :)

Options tab (the tab just left of Preview/Edit, which is the right-most tab in the window) -> Audio Track Remapping.

I'm not sure if RB can change default subtitles. Maybe someone else can weigh in on that. If not, see if your remote has a subtitle button, which is perhaps more convenient than setting up subtitles via the DVD's menus. Same holds true for audio, actually.

no, rb can't remap subtitles afaik. if you play a DVD, the subtitles usually aren't on by default anyway, unless its a foreign film or something.

There are, I think, several ways to set default audio and subtitle streams.

An easy way is to use DVD Shrink in reauthor mode. Open "Title1" from your ripped folder and right-click on its name in the left-hand pane. Use the resulting popup menu to select or hide default streams before saving to another folder without compression.

I was aware of the method within DVDShrink, but I was just curious if there was a similar method within DVD-RB.

I haven't taken the plunge yet with having Shrink remove everything I don't want and exporting (uncompressed) to folder where DVD-RB will actually do the recoding, but that's next! Can anyone else report any luck on such endeavors?

The PGC method here will seem to do the trick for my purposes with default lang/subs.

I'm still confused... since there typically is no "default" subtitle track, how do you set one? Swapping them only makes the menu incorrect -- so when you select "French" from a menu you might get "Spanish".

Are you saying you want to pick a subtitle and have it play without having to select it at start up?

Sorry, JDobbs, I may have been lacking in the details...

I tend to make movie-only backups. I'm a big fan of Japanese cinema, and when I put the disc in a player I like it to play the original japanese track by default and display ENG subtitles (forced) regardless of the player's settings.

Naturally, for someone like my brother they can be switched to eng/none manually.

DVDShrink's 'default streams' feature enables this option.

I know it gets confusing when full disc/menus are concerned, but naturally there are none in the backups I'm talking about.

Incidentally, JDobbs, your software is absolutely stunning. I've been using the HC encoder and have been left breathless by some of the results (particularly on Hoodwinked!).
