That's the only conclusion I can come up with. It wouldn't surprise me. It IS 4 year old technology. It's from the age of the infancy of CUDA. GeForce 200 series? Why can't they just make a card that doesn't take up half the case, require a huge heatsink, and just focus on 2d and video rendering, rather than all of these all-out 3d cards. It's either an all-out card or something barely better than onboard graphics.

Seeing as an Intel X3100 can do it (Aero enabled, screen at 1280x1024x60Hz), I doubt it's a GPU bottleneck.

Well then what would it be? Aero seems to be messing it up and it's like not things aren't optimal. It's only a like a week old OS install. The decoding is going just fine, there is no decoding bottleneck. The slowness comes with Aero, which is all GPU and RAM, and you don't need much RAM for video playback.

When the amount of frames that can be displayed in a second (refresh rate) is less than the amount of frames per second in a video being presented (fps), what do you think happens to the frames in the video that can't be displayed?
(that's all I can honestly think of)

We've been through this. It's NOT dropping frames. This is stuttering! Motion is not smooth! It only happens in Aero! There is a bottleneck somewhere. Aero uses A LOT of GPU resources!

ARGH! Now with Aero off I cannot play video fullscreen AT ALL! 60 Hz material drops frames down to ~45 FPS! I'm fed up with this pile of crap. However, if I mouse down to pop up the info, stats, and scroll bar, the video returns up to normal frame rate!

1) Try: View-> Renderer-> Reset-> Optimal. (for when Aero is off)

#2 not needed. #1 fixed everything on Aero. I had forgot I turned it back on and I thought I had it disabled because of how normal the video was playing. Issue resolved! Thanks, all!

Yes, and I unchecked disabling Aero. That's gay. Aero IS Windows 7. Without it, it's no better to have 7 than XP.

Yes, Win 7 has a lot better kernel, among other nice enhancements, but it if looked no different than previous versions I wouldn't have bothered.

I think it's more comfy to stick with one version of each software rather than upgrading volens nolens to the latest stand. After a while you'll learn all the problems and [hopefully] all the workarounds.

As long as I can process music (studio level) on my W98 I'll keep it like that. As long as I can process DVDs on my XP I'll keep it like that. As long as my internet PC (this one) works I'll keep this Ubuntu version. My SAT PC has w2k, no reason to change. Ideally would have been to have all the computers installed with the same OS (version and subversion). In my case, due to completely different tasks each computer has to carry out, it's no issue.

I also resist FW upgrades.
