im not asking which matrix is the best, im just curious what matrix everyone else uses. also, if you use a matrix, do you usually apply it to everything (ie, main movie, or just low/very low bitrates).
i myself use AutoQ2 for everything. ive tried many other matrices, and i find this one to be much better than any of the other ones i've tried. it keeps detail, removes a lot of blockyness and noise.

I typically use the matrix one lower than the average bitrate. Meaning, if my bitrate averages out at 4.3 mb or so, I'll use the one designated for 3-3.5 mb.

KVCD Notch for high compression movies, default for others.

The one that comes with Procoder 2!

I have to admit that I find these matrices very confusing and I'm totally left behind by threads arguing the merits of alternative settings.
I can, however, see the advantage of optimising an encoder's behaviour for individual sources. Literally.
That's why I'm exploring AutoQMatEnc with DVD-RB. It does it for you!

@m1ckran - you would do well to explore using Rockas's wonderful Rebuilder Matrix Editor.
PS Ashes coming home to OZ in 6 months :)

Hello Blu
I've looked at Rockas' work and I'm impressed, but I still like the idea of an encoder working out the best setting.
I think the England team have more in common with ashes than we like to admit. They pretty-much burned themselves out beating Oz. :o
The main focus now is the world cup. What's the difference between Australia and a teabag? A teabag stays in the cup longer! :D

i find AutoQ2 (Avamat7) is a good matrix for anything, so i use it for all my projects.

Hi happycase,
How does one know what bitrate each matrix is designated for?

They tell you. EG 3 "High-Low (3500-4000)". The numbers are the average bitrates the matrix is good for.

Does using a matrix affect the encoding time?

This is a pretty interesting thread. I've done a lot of stuff with my backups but have never touched the matrix side of things. Except with AutoQMatEnc (http://www.autoqmatenc.com) which does it automatically.
