The BBC and Fluendo have released the first preview of the Schrödinger project. An implenentation of BBC's dirac.

Schrödinger includes an OGG mapping of dirac.

did somebody tried it allready how fast compared to Snow and the non optimized Dirac for now and how much slower vs X264 ;D

Schrödinger needs an easier nickname.... or I can call it Dirac?

It's a preview release, so if it is working well is already very good. And why they don't chose matroska as the container? There is an special reason?

I would be happy to test Schrodinger's codec, but my neighbor won't let me borrow his cat! :D

Well, technically speaking, Schrodinger is an implementation of the DIRAC codec. It is meant to provide portable libraries written in C. Originally they meant to use the MXF container for storing video, but the OGG container is also used. Basically you could use any container format to store DIRAC compliant videostreams. If you would want to use Schrodinger as an alternative to commercially licensed products then i suppose you use the DIRAC codec for video and the OGG Vorbis codec for audio.

Well... that sounds nice theoretically but since playback and surely encoding takes a huge CPU workload, i don't see this working anytime soon.
