Is there any software which will allow me to rip dvd's to .avi using vp7 (http://www.on2.com) codec ?
Virtuadub cant open .vob files and virtuadub mod seems to create problems over here.

read the guides. You need to use DGIndex to index the VOB files and create a D2V. This will also rip out the audio tracks, which will be AC3, WAV, or DTS.

This D2V file can be referenced in an AviSynth (avs) script. Look into RealAnime - it's a nice GUI that supports VP6/7 IIRC. I dont use On2's codecs, not quite my style.

Good luck, read all the rules for the forum and guides before posting :)

The question you need to be asking yourself is why do you want to use VP7? Most of the other popular codecs are better for most things. If you want to encode animated content, I would certainly reccommend x264 and RV10. For film content, XviD and x264 are my top picks.

Regardless, I'm not aware of a GUI that makes encoding in VP6/7 easy. Maybe StaxRip? If not, the only way is to learn how to use DGIndex, AviSynth, and VirtualDub (or some other VFW encoder).

Sure it does. http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/

Is that REALLY the best idea though?

Since when does anyone deal with just one VOB? (unless you're just testing of course) DGIndex makes dealing with multiple VOBs, and demuxing the audio so very easy...

Thanks for your help.
Since virtuadub cant handle ac-3, i guess that I cant really use it. So I am gonna use Realanime.
I use vp7 as it gives lower file sizes at better quality ( provided you are prepared to leave the computer alone for long time while it does a 2 pass encoding ).
I think I will go for x264 for dvd rips.

Nope. But the fact remains that VD can open VOBS and actually I use it quite often to do so. I was just trying to clarify.

Frankly, I don't even know what a Vp7 is :D
