What came 1st the chicken or the egg, I know same question all over again. I know this is a matter of personnel preference but I figured I would ask for opinions anyway. I currently use Procoder 2.04.02 and don't mind the amt. of time it takes. I usually do the whole DVD and just remove foreign languages and the movie previews. I also steal space from extras by 25% and enable menu encoding. The avg. main movie bit rate is between 2800 kb and 3700kb. Am I cheating myself out of better quality movies by using Procoder compared to CCE (own ver. 2.70.02), HC, QuEnc, or any other? I know I could test myself but would like to hear other opinions. I am also aware of another topic “Which Free Encoder is Recommended” I am looking for more info then just the free encoders. Thanks you in advance for any comments you may add.

I think you can have better encoding results with other encoders if the avg. bitrate is above 3000kbps. Procoder 'softens' the picture alot. I like the HC encodes but on 0.18 I think the VBR bias needs to be pushed little more furher to the right, maybe setting the value to 35 if your avg. bitrate is arround 3500kbps(I don't like how dark scenes look like when the setting is on 25). If the bitrate is lower I think its risky raising the value, you might loose some details on 'high-action' scenes.

There are people here that are very experienced in this field, I'm sure they can provide more accurate information aboit it :)

@Prowler

I've currently using AQE 0.33 beta 4 and with it I got something like this (http://www.vmesquita.com/forum/index.php?topic=6538.msg43935#msg43935). ;)

See ya,

in defense of the forumonaunts here, most of us probably use the free encoders, or perhaps cce basic (the cheap version). the few people who do own the more expensive packages probably do not own multiple ones (e.g. procoder & cce), and consequently will be unable to give you advice about which (expensive) solution is preferred.

This question has been asked thousands of times...it's even forbidden to ask "What is the best......". Just believe your own eyes. Each encoder has its strength. CCE is good at progressive/medium-high bitrates but CCE hates interlaced movies.(for my eyes :)).

MPEG is based on perception not on "real bits", so for some people a movie could look better than for others....just a question of taste!

Sapstar, all I am looking for is to see what other users use, not to determine what is best. Sapstar what do you use for pgms over 4000kbs, 3500kbs, 3000kbs and under 3000kbs. Thats all I would like to know.

The two encoders I'm using are AutoQMatEnc and HCEnc. HCEnc when it's well above 4000 and I want my encode fast...otherwise I use my own encoder. :D Not surprising, is it?!

Yeah it is surprising, using HCEnc for over 4000. I had you figured for AutoQ on everything ;) That is the kind of info I am looking for, thanks!!
