Wintel MPEG4 Decoding

Im using CoreAVC for AVC decoding so I am left with needing a MPEG 4 decoder for WinXP 32bit.

I was using FFDSHOW but it now seems Videomixer9 has set himself on an anti intel tack and he isnt interested in supporting Intel. The other builds seem old.

I could use XVID but Im told the decoder is slow. Same with Divx.

So what to use?

Other builds? What about issa's? He updates at least weekly, and tends to use the same patches and makes ICL builds as well.

I didn't noticed such a huge differences between ffdshow, xvid and divx decoding speeds (with pp disabled), only few percent.

xvid/divx are obviously all mpeg-4 asp, so every mpeg-4 asp decoder will decode them (when using the same coding tools) with the same speed

Mm, thanks guys. So, the talk about FFDSHOW being faster at decoding MPEG4-ASP than say, XVID or Divx is not true? They all decode with the same speed?

Of course not. All decoders probably have different speed from each other. It really depends on how optimized it is.

A small test with timecodec on a ~2000 frames long 720x304 DivX AVI on a pentium M 1.4 GHz. (all pp turned off)


ffdshow: 370.5 fps
DivX: 242.1 fps
XviD: 228.4 fps

Seems to me ffdshow is a clear winner.

yes libavcodec (as useable in ffdshow) should be the fastest mpeg-4 asp decoder

I understand in the near future we will see Core ASP dshow decoder. Might be interesting considering their performace in AVC.
