View Full Version : My first try: video/audio fine, subtitle missing

Since I do own a divx standalone I thought I'd give AutoGK 2.27 a try. I've ripped a small 20 minute special feature from a DVD with DVD Decrypter in Stream Processing/Direct Stream Copy mode. The resulting "Vts_01_1.vob" was recognized correctly by AutoGK: video/1 english audio/1 german subtitle.

My target size of 175 MB was roughly met by a resulting 183 MB Xvid file with 128 kbit VBR MP3 audio. Only problem: I do not have any subtitles! I've tried several software players (VLC, MPC) but none of them displayed any subtitles. Can Xvid avi files contain subtitles at all? Wouldn't AutoGK rip to .srt or .sub or something? Couldn't find info on this in the FAQ.

Looking through your log, I see[20.05.2006 16:45:44] Preparing subtitles.
[20.05.2006 16:46:13] Audio1...Something took place during those 29 seconds.
ColorMatrix("Rec.709->Rec.601",opt=0,hints=false)
VobSub("M:\Test\agk_tmp\movie.idx")
You appeart to have movie.sub and movie.idx files. Are they still there? If so, you can run VobSub tools against the files to see what's in them. IIRC, SubResync would be the tool, but I may be misremembering.

You appear to have movie.sub and movie.idx files. Are they still there?

No, there were no such file when AutoGkwas finished. Also, when I ripped with Decrypter all I got was

Vts_01_0.ifo
Vts_01_0.vob

since I chose Direct Stream Copy instead of Demux. Still should be fine cause AutoGK recognized the subtitle stream in this, right?

I would run Vobsub manually, and determine if the subtitle stream is there and usable.

Since the encoding of the file worked fine I just thought to rip the subtitles as srt manually again (via Subrip) and then use two files as I usually do. In the process of doing that I relaized that AutoGK only offered the first of the two subtitles in the vob which was an empty one, I would have needed to use the second subtitle.

After ocr'ing the correct subtitles to srt and renaming them to match the avi's name I did not get any subtitles displayed in MPC or Crystal or VLC. Other movies on my HD do display the subs so what's going on now?

And do Xvid encoded files contain subtitles in their avi container? Maybe the player is depicting the empty one that's already in the avi and thus ignoring the external srt? Is there any tool that displays the complete streams of an avi?

AVI does not have subtitles streams. Your choice is either to "burn in" subtitles with the video stream, or have them in a separate file, in a format readable by a player or with DirectVobSub.

Well, then I just can't figure out why the srt file is not read and displayed :(

I guess I'm missing something.

srt files will be managed by players that support them, such as BSPlayer.

Have you looked to see what's in the subtitle file?

Yep, it looks exactly like those other srt files that work fine with their avis. For a test I loaded it in Subtitle Workshop and saved it so that any inconsistencies would be fixed. To no avail...
