That only applies to the cheap version.

yeah, well, "cheap"
if you expect it to play movies and it does that no better than a $50 DVD player, $499 is not exactly cheap, at least not if you could have had that functionality for $100 more *if only you'd have known*.

The XBox 360 is also excessively crippled if you buy the less expensive version (e.g. the loss of backward compatibility). On both these systems, spend the extea $100. Better yet, don't buy either.

Compatibility just requires harddrive. If you buy that, you'll have a machine which is functionally equivalent to pro model.

it is the fact that they are going to market the cheap version with the capabilities to play bd's, but after hollywood starts using ict it will quit working. just seems like dirty business to me. if they would just come out and say "hey, this one is cheaper, but after a year or so, one of the best functons will cease to work." it wouldnt be so bad.

If cheaper ps3 and xbox's hd-dvd drive sell significant amounts, studios are in no position to start enforcing down-scaling because it would just be bad bussiness.

i really dont think they (hollywood) are all that concerned with making decisions that are unbeneficial to the consumer, atleast from the way ive seen it going on. they will do it whether sony sells tons of cheap ps3's or not. they have to protect their investments from all of us evil pirates...

hehe

Yes, they are going to enforce ICT and by conclusion increase piracy as people who can't watch the stuff they buy in the resolution they expect, get the movie from a "professional" decriptor (industrial scale, real, pirate) and thereby lose the incident to actually even buy the disc for themselves in the first place. Nice, they really try hard to actually make us what they like to call us.

hmmmm...one wonders if that is the point, to convert more people to piracy so they can sue more people and make more money....the grand plot has been discovered!!! :sly:
