The first "open Movie" was recently released, the movie and all files used in its producttion are open content, with none of the regular copyright restrictions. this site (http://www.blendernation.com/2006/05/18/the-worlds-first-open-movie-released/) has some more in depth information on the project.

elephantsdream.org (http://www.elephantsdream.org/) is the projects home page. The entire movie is available for (completely legal) download from the homepage in various formats, including a 1920x1080 HD avi with a 5.1ch ac3 audio track. If you are interested in downloading the film you should probably use the torrents because the sites servers are under a lot of stress and may not be reliable.

On first Impression the visualls are quite impressive, though the voice acting and script struck me as a bit odd.

Unfortunately they apear to have used the severely outdated MP42 codec to encode the HiDef master from which the other files were derived, which is rather disapointing. still It will be nice to have a relatively high quality non-legally-encumbered peice of source material to use for codec testing.

It had nice graphics, but I was totally lost. Anyone care to explain the story?

From what I've hered the kid named Emo and the guy named Proog(?) are from different worlds or some such, and Emo accidently winds up in Proogs world, but to be honest it didn't make much sense to me either.

Cool, they even offer a 1024x576 version, thumbs up... ^^

EDIT: Yay, 350-400 kB/s! Gonna leave the upload open for some days, so doom9 can complain about my high bw usage again... (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=813950#post813950) ;D

it looks like a 'mini-world' I forget the literary term for it about how people start to rely on machines to much and how it can make them do stupid things

alteast thats me, and I'd just finished writing my last midterm so yeah

it was pretty cool, can't imagine how long that would take to render in 1080p
I had a bit of a hard time decoding it at the 576 range, its pretty damed cool if you asked me

You downloaded the quicktime one didn't you :sly:, the quicktime trailer at 576P drops a lot of frames for me on a few of the tough scenes, but the 1080P (pseudo) mpeg4 asp file plays back without any droped frames.

only have a 1200:800 display
the 1080p is kinda useless Xd
but yeah, I did get the quicktime

you could have done like me and reencode the 1920x1080 mp42 into 1280x720 avc. The 1920 torrent runs really well so the 800mb are not that a long wait and using x264, 1280x720 @ 2mbit/s look "perfect".

Bandwidth sucks on my ISP, I'm to lazy to re-encode, and I didn't think of that

I wonder what rendertime was...:sly:

Rendering such a movie on film resolution is no small task: thankfully Bowie State University donated access to XSeed, their cluster of 240 Dual-core Xserves to render the movie. XSeed took over 125 days to render the movie, using up to 2.8GB of memory to render a single frame. With each high resolution image consisting of up to 9 different layers, terabytes of data were flying across the globe and pouring into the Amsterdam studio.

Impressive :D

Is'nt Star Wars "Revelations" (http://panicstruckpro.com/revelations/) the first open-movie???

Revelations was not made entirely with open source software, which is what that site's definition of "open" is. If I remember correctly one of the bonus features on Revelations states that they used both Maya and 3D Studio Max for creating 3D elements, both of which are closed source.

To create Elephants, they only used open source software (even the OS).

Edit: beaten!

Has somebody come up with a way to make use of those PNG files (e.g. turn it into a huffyuv file)?

doesn't avisynth support sequential images as a source?
provided you have the bandy to acquire the images that is, I'd imagine it would be serval gigs worth of images

Both, Avisynth and VDubMod should be able to load image sequences!

Around 20GB to be exact, and Im already downloading!

Gonna leave the upload open for some weeks... ^^
