I need to cut 5-6 parts from my MPG-2 video file.I marked the exact point of time in minutes and seconds, where to cut but I was wondering which tool could I use,it would be good if it's freeware??I know VirtualDUb can cut to one file but I need to for cutting to minimum 5 clips.I have Speed Video Splitter but it can't cut at the exact point of time (e.g I need to cut from 23:05s but when I move the slider it can cut from 23:15s,so the program becomes usless).unfortunately I can't input time from where to cut,I only can move the slider fro mleft to right with this program.WHICH TOOL DO YA GUYS SUGGEST??

VideoRedo will do you well.

If the exact point that you want to cut is not a key frame then you can't cut it.

You can use cuttermaran (http://www.cuttermaran.de/) and hcenc if you want to cut in a point which is not a key frame (it simply reencodes the needed frames of the gop where you are performing the cut).
It also does a pretty good job in keeping audio and video synchronized...

If the exact point that you want to cut is not a key frame then you can't cut it.

... unless the cutting software can intelligently re-encode the minimal required frames around the cut-point.

VideoReDo does this, as likely do other commercial editors.

It also appears that Cuttermaran using HCenc can now do this.

you can try Mpeg2schnitt (http://www.mdienert.de/mpeg2schnitt/), the site is german but english is available, you'll need to demultiplex the video first.

Hope it helps

It can't set the starting point of a cut at other than an I-frame. It needs a P-frame to set the end.

I just retried, cutting from a B frame to a B frame, checking the result with virtualdubmod, and it did it correctly.
remember to enable "use encoding mode" in the settings...

I didn't know this. Did you really encode or is it just the settings that have to be tweaked? Does it re-mux fine without encoding?

Forget the answer. I must see this myself :).

Done it. Looks nice. I've just checked the resulting file with PVAStrumento and received the following warning:

ALERT> -31486 video frames missing at 00:20:59.224.

This happened twice. Do you think authoring software like Pinnacle Studio will be confused?

No, it will not. The dvd is finished. Great hint, ilpippo80.
