There are many commercial audio tools for recording such things as internet audio streams.
Are there any freeware tools that you all know of that can record these web streams?
So far I've only come across commercial ones like Total Recorder, Advanded MP3/WMA Recorder, and All Recorder.

Afaik there is only one reasonable tool, StationRipper. Best way to find good stations is to enter a keyword in the search text box of the shoutcast portal. StationRipper has MediaMonkey support which is by far the best MP3 application.

But doesn't StationRipper only capture streams which you can provide a URL with? i.e. Shoutcase / Ice cast?
I need to be able to capture a stream that I am unable to get the exact url to. It's for a local AM radio station that just opens up WMP and starts to play that way.

If you have a Creative sound card check if you have the smart recorder with the "what u hear" setting. This will do exactly what you are looking for. It records whatever you are hearing through your speakers and can record as wma, mp3 or wave.
I just tested with xm online and a song playing with wmp. It worked for both so a streaming radio station in wmp should be no problem.
good luck

I do not actually because my audio comes from a DeLL Inspiron laptop so it's onboard.

Total Recorder, while not 'FreeWare' only costs $12 and well worth it. I paid my $12 several years ago and still think it does a good job.

Thanks for the tip! Previously I used windows media encoder to encode to wav by using "what u hear", but I wasn't aware of this far more compact tool to do so.
