Coverting DV to MPEG.

Hi,

I have some footage on my minidv camcorder which I would like to upload to the internet.

The videos are only around 4 minutes in length, I am looking to convert these to a format which will give the greatest balance of quality and compression as well as allowing others to view easily.

Can anyone recommend the most suitable method or point me in the right direction to a guide. I have been toying with VirtualDub but not sure if I am heading in the right direction?

common Internet formats are WMV, QuickTime and RealVideo (or even MPEG-1). Some video editors, e.g. Magix Video deluxe, can export DV directly to WMV, or you may use Windows Movie Maker, if you prefer free software.

There are video editors which can export to QuickTime or RealVideo, and there may be some free software, too, but I can't recommend one, because I don't have much experience with those formats.

Another option is DivX; there's a web player available now. Your friends have to download and install it, though (can be automated).

I have Adobe premiere pro which I will try. Having used DVD2SVCD, CCE in the past for Dvds with great results I was wondering if I could benefit from utilising any of these tools for encoding my footage. I am led to believe the quality of encoders differs greatly with CCE being the benchmark.

CCE is a leading MPEG-2 encoder, but it is not recommended for MPEG-1 (or audio encoding). You cannot use CCE for the video formats I mentioned above, though.

Regarding the tools you can use Adobe Premiere Pro, of course, to create your web video.
