I've noticed that it's not all that easy to find much information on portable videos and particularly their file specs. So for portable video developers I will outline some of the specs here for you, most of which i've found from testing and development.
> 3GP is as common format for all mobile phones and all phones should be able to play back any 3gp file, regardless of resolution.
> The bit-rate can sometimes crash some phones and force a restart (namely the SE-W800i which i tested it on), if it exceeds a certain level. I've not managed to say the exact bitrate because it seems to be variable and possibly coupled with the file size of the clip.
> The audio codec used is either AMR or AMR-WB (adaptive multi-rate / AMR-wide band) This can have a series of sample rates and it is best to encode to mono to ensure compatibility between phones.
> The video should be encoded using the QCIF resize filter (quarter common intermediate format), which has a res of 174 x 144.
> AAC (advanced audio coder) is the way forward for high quality audio but not all phones support this codec.
If you stick to these settings then you'll have no problem making a cross-platform compatible mobile vid. If you need any more help with file specs send me an email:
