Hi what i want to do is encode the soundtrack of a video and then split and splice it with audio from a different source, now i presume the the final mp3 has to be the same lenght as the video it is going to be encoded with, but does it have to be the same down to the millisecond ?? if it is slighly shorter will the final ancode slightly strech them so that they are of equal lengh ???

Also i want to add an mp3 commentry track to an existing xvid i have could i do this or will i have to start again and re-encode the file and add the commentry track then ??

From my experience both tracks will just run their full length, so if the audio is only 3/4th as long as the video the respective tracks will run for

video: ----
audio: ---

with the last 1/4th of the video having no sound. So it doesn't really have to be down to the millisecond. I dunno what happens if the audio file is longer tho, can imagine that the file just stops when the video stops. There will be no stretching in any case.

Adding the commentary track is easy if you want an ogm/mp4/mkv, just remux them in the chosen format with the extra audio track. You need an advanced avimuxer to have a multitrack avi, but it's generally recommended to use mkv or mp4 for it tho.

You can have 2 audio tracks in an AVI, no problem. I've made quite a few with the commentary track, as well as the film's audio.

Once you start cutting and splicing audio, you'll qickly run into synch problems.

many thanks, I have managed to do everything i asked, using Audacity ( cutting, splicing the soundtrack ), nero ( for mixing a commentry track so it has the original soundtrack at a lower volume in the background ) and Virtualdubmod for adding the corrected soundtrack and commentry track to the original XviD file :D
