Hi, I just bought DVD-RB Pro and am curious as to which MPEG2 encoder most users recommend. I don't necessarily expect a statement of which one is "best," but rather the pros and cons of each. If this info is available it would be greatly appreciated.

I think if you browse back through this forum you will find similar topics to this.
As far as free encoders goes I find HC that comes included DVD-RB Pro is very good.
cheers

HC for sure. HC is similar to CCE as far as quality, sometimes even better. i myself notice some blocking in some scenes (specifically smokey scenes), but rarely and some might not even notice it.

just a guess.. but its likely a quality/speed conclusion

My guess is because he make it... but that's just me guessing ;)
...and maybe cause he likes the way it looks for encoding. :D
edit: spelling... :o
Sometimes I encode a DVDRB segment in HC, CCE, and Procoder, and compare the three. If one looks better, I'll use that. Otherwise I just stick with HC.

sorry, i forgot about AQE.
i haven't tried it yet, so i guess i can't say HC is clearly the best.

I recommend that jdobbs, rockas, dragongodz, sapster, hank, mpucoder, lightninguk (my apologies to those I've left out but you're there in spirit) should collaborate and produce a software suite that would scare the living daylights out of the corporations.
PS Perhaps a lawyer or two should also join the team!

Can't be! Can You imagine... a lot of threads like: "Which is the best?" or "Which should I use for... ?" I think it isn't good idea ;) Unless there will be same special part of forum called: "Another free encoders [which should I use]"

I totally and completely agree with this! :) I would help but I can't do crap for programming right now. I am beginning to learn, but not fast enough. I will just donate!
Lets do this!

@merlin7777
Good idea about the donations! Even I could do that. If there were to be such a project, with an appeal for initial donations, I think I would contribute too.

"Free" encoders. Really, they are all good. Try a few rebuilds as suggested in previous replies. AutoQMatEnc gives excellent results, in about 8 to 10 hours. If you use it, do it before you go to bed and it should be ready in the morning. Also since it is beta it still has some bugs to work out. Have fun with RB Pro, try all the encoders, judge for yourself.
Good Luck Amigo,
Grumpy
