Hi there,

I'm relatively new to converting DVD to XViD, and I've gone through all the tutorials I can find (and managed to get good results with AutoGK and even GK).

I was just wondering which parts of the process affect the speed at which GK converts to XViD the most? Using AutoGK, conversion takes around 90 mins. With GK (and settings as described in the doom9 tutorial) it's taking around 3 hours or more.

Any ideas where I might be going wrong, or is this just a side-effect of better quality conversion in GK?

Cheers,
Jon

Both GK and AutoGK use the same encoding "engine" -- VirtualDubMod and the DivX/XviD codecs. Unless you're using GK for another codec (x.264 or SBC), then there are only two things that comes to mind, the latter being most likely:Filter selection differences -- you have the option in GK to add (or eliminate) all sorts of AviSynth filters, which may change the encoding speed. AutoGK makes all filtration decisions for you.

Resolution -- this is most likely the cause of your significant variation in encoding speed. How many pixels per frame are being encoded? Do the math: width X height.

There are also settings within the XviD codec that can change the encoding speed. AutoGK always encodes with its own presets, whereas Gordian Knot will allow you to adjust parameters for better quality, but usually at a cost of encode speed.

Yeah, as mentioned, it may be codec settings or filters\resolution that you're using in GKnot that aren't being used in AutoGK. One thing not mentioned yet, though, is the possibility of doing a 1-pass in AutoGK, whereas GKnot is only 2-pass. So, if you're going for Target Quality (In Percentage) with AutoGK, then there's your time difference right there.

But without logs and scripts, we're only just guessing.
