I'n using TmPGenc DVD author 1.5. I've got mono wav files and when I use these to produce a DVD I only get sound out of the L. Channel. I don't want to convert a mono soundtrack to stereo in a wav editor as this will double the filesize. I thought that a mono soundtrack is part of the DVD spec.

Is there any way to get the player to play this in both channels without playing with audio configuration in the DVD player's menu. Is this an authoring or DVD player bug/limitation?

Mono is part of the spec, and if the resulting DVD plays in only the left there is a problem with the authoring program. You can try to correct it by changing the number of channels in the audio attributes from 2 to 1 using IfoEdit. If that does not work (authoring may have added a silent second channel) use a different program. I know for a fact that MuxMan has been tested with wav files from 1 to 8 channels, 16, 20, and 24 bit, 48K and 96K sampling, and works correctly. However, MuxMan will leave the audio as LPCM, taking up a lot of space and bitrate. If you are encoding to AC3 use an external encoder first. If the encoder does not allow mono then feed it the same wav file for left and right.
