View Full Version : Video playback stuttering in Windows XP.

Hey, guys. Thanks a lot for having me here and all that pizazz, but...

I have a PC that I built myself that seems to have a big issue with any videos encoded with xvid or divx. No matter the video it stutters and skips.

I've tested the same video on 3 different machines and the video is perfect on all the others except this one PC. I've tried everything from reformatting a total of 3 times, using all different versions of the xvid codec, FFDshow builds, and etc.

System specs:

Windows XP Professional SP2
ASUS P5WD2 Premium /w Pentium D 830
NVidia 7800 GTX
Maxtor Diamond series 200GB SATA HDD

I've heard that divx hates SATA or something of that nature and the SATA controller mounted on the motherboard is part of the 955x chipset (Intel).

I don't really know how else to describe the problem. I've done everything I can think of with defragmenting using Diskeeper, reformatting, reinstalling, upgrading drivers, blah.

Nothing I do has helped except using the older version of WMP with no hardware acceleration enabled which just alleviated the problem slightly. It's still extremely apparent, though.

I love anyone who can help me solve this problem, because I really, really want to enjoy the home movies that I stupidly encoded before I deleted the originals.

Sounds like a graphics driver problem to me. See if the problem also exists with older/newer vga drivers.

I've used all different versions of the Forceware drivers from 77.xx to 84.25b. The 77.xx series was from when my card was first released. If I downgrade any further my card doesn't function correctly in certain applications (and Maya7 just crashes).

I'm not sure if this will help, but how about running the directX diagnostics? run "dxdiag" and step through the program. Hopefully it can narrow down the problem.

1. what's the CPU usage when you play problematic videos?
2. is this only xvid/divx? what about h264, mpeg2, etc?

I'm going to have to get back home (I'm working the 12 - 8AM tonight) before I can run the diagnostic for DirectX.

This is any type of mpeg playback. I've already checked the codecs and none of them are "broken".

CPU usage is nil. Like, 1-9% when running WMP 10 and even less when running WMP classic. But, I have noticed that during these skips HDD usage peaks to 100% for a split second then returns to normal until the next skip. That's the reason I was leaning on the SATA controller, but no one else seems to have a problem with it. I even went so far as to run a RAM test and HDD diagnostic two nights ago and to no avail. No problems found.

The other (obvious?) thing to verify is: in the Device Manager make certain your hard disks are operating at full speed (UDMA-whatever). To fix you can usually just delete the drivers and re-boot.

I had similar problems not that long ago.

For me, AC3Filter was causing stuttery playback, as well as DirectVobSub (if subtitles were used, don't know why, I'm working on it now!).

Try GSpot or GraphEdit to see what Codecs are being loaded when playing back your files. It might also pay to disable XViD playback in ffdshow and use the XViD codec itself to decode it?

I found a program online that when it loads says, "headshot!". I've since deleted it, but it goes through and lists all the codecs installed on a system, then tells you next to it if it's broken or ok. They were all okay.

My HD is running at UDMA-5, I believe. I've already tried the trick with deleting the driver and it was set the same way when it booted back up.

I've already tried using VLC. No dice on that one. Same problem. When I get back home in about an hour I'll try to burn an .avi and a .mpeg to a CD and see if that still has the same problem.

Yes. I installed them from the disc that came with the motherboard then went to the Intel site to get the 955x chipset drivers as well.

Keep in mind, I've reinstalled three different times.

Okay, I'm extremely sad.

I tried burning the files to a CD and playing them back. They worked flawlessly. I'm really, really upset because at this very moment I can't afford a new hard drive and with all the stuff that's going on I most likely won't be able to for a while.

I called Maxtor and they want me to send it back, but then I'd have to wait 2-4 weeks for a new drive. I really don't know what to do.

Could it be a driver issue?

The drive in question is a Maxtor 6L200M0.

Okay, I messed with a lot of settings and eventually disabled one called "Write caching". It fixed every stuttering problem and my boot time is increased by at least 2x.

Could someone please explain to me why something supposedly so beneficial to OS and access speed (according to Maxtor) caused such a problem?
