What's your favorite software player for x264-encoded videos?

Nero Showtime is what I use, but it sucks. VLC is free so that's good, but I don't like the icon and how it looks and its attempts to invade my computer by adding context menu's to everything including the Recycle Bin...I have never tried MPlayer....ffdshow is what I think is the best option...I'm going to start using that....

You should try MPlayer! Get full package with Windows-friendly GUI here:

You should also get the latest build of VLC Player. It has a new skin, maybe you like that more ^^

ffdshow is what I use too, because I wan't to use MPC with Haali Renderer.

My choice is Media Player Classic + ffdshow. But have installed Mplayer with Mpui as well :)

strictly speaking you can play x264 mp4 files in every avc mp4 player, so you might also want to add:
- cyberlink powerdvd 7
- elecard mpeg player
- tcpmp (imho the fastest avc player on earth :D )

I love the new WM Player (leaked 11) especially. It looks so slick. Their codec may suck, but their players don't.

WMPlayer plus ffdshow or CoreAVC is on the list too ;)

IMO WMPlayer is the worst DirectShow Player available. You event can't see which filters are used to render your file and there's no way to configure or block/prefer filters. Furthermore everything looks that much "over styled" instead of a clean and compact interface, like MPC has it. IMO WMPlayer is just like "Use it the way M$ wants you to do and nothing more" or "The more features/controls/information we hide from the user, the better". And no: I don't want to be redirected to M$ websites all the time and I don't want to see stupid "Unkown error" messages for files that play 100% fine in MPC. So the last WMPlayer that was usable to me, is the old 6.4 series. And MPC is like WMPlayer 6.4 plus 1.000.000 improvements. Gabest did a great job with that!

But I have to say, that I did not try the leaked WMPlayer v11.

I tried it. Well attempted to. Wouldn't install under x64. Supports XP SP2 only.

If I run into troubles playing HD content (A64 3000+, so only for the upper end of files), I switch to mplayer.

MPC is the player I use, but I'd hardly call it a favorite. Maybe if it ever gets non-modal filter configs (I looked, but couldn't find where to change it) and cleans its interface up a bit. I guess I just dislike WMP6's interface decisions.

The options screen is pretty nicely done now though. That's one area it easily beats zoom player, along with subtitles, since vsfilter via directshow is so flaky.

Summary: GPL violation

Recently I've notified about these two products that they use code from the guliverkli project, one of them is free but closed source and not GPLed player (KMPlayer, http://www.kmplayer.com/), while the other is a fully commercial product (http://www.vx30.com/). There are boundled dshow filters, string, toolbars, dialogs, command line switches, etc..., which can be verified easily by just running the applications and taking a look, or a bit harder by analysing the memory dump. Since I have no better idea about what to do now (I got no reply to the email I sent to kmplayer's developer, it would probably be the same with vx30's too...), I'm posting this as a news here. The developements are going slow anyway because of my job and life, but these cases won't inspire me either.

There is an official comment written in korean about this. To make a long story short, The KMPlayer has its own developing history since 2001. KMP was written by delphi from scratch and had nothing to do with MPlayer or etc. MPC is nothing but such a technical reference of media player as mplayer, zoomplayer, bsplayer, tcmp, vlc, mv2player, radlight, crystal etc.

I'll let you know some behind stories of KMP. The full name of KMP is a K-Multimedia Player. The "K" of KMP simply indicates the initial character of the developer's family name(Kang). What a funny thing it is to think of his naming sence! Anyway, he had been very famous for Kang utility series under domestic condition which really looked like Norton utilities from DOS in viewpoint of perfomances and functions. Some day after his obligatory military service, he was fascinated by the overlaying feature of Sasami2k. The developer told me that it was the main cause fallen into temptation to do it by himself. You can still find a piece of evidence in the current version of KMP. (Right click on kmp and select Overlay Skin Control under the Skins menu)


KMP did not include GPL codes or binary within its executable file.

The external libraries packed in KMP were not modified or changed at all, but composed of a binary or compiled version from cvs directly. Actually, there are no needs to change anything for its rapid developement status of each components. That's the reason why there are so many bugs whenever KMP is updated.

KMP was not dependent upon any kinds of external libraries. Originally, KMP was designed as a standalone player based on directshow structure.

Some of Gabest's filters don't function properly outside of MPC though. Like mpadec only recently got an external dialogue. Before that, you couldn't configure it externally. Then look at something like audiosplitter. Not much use by itself. So perhaps the used stolen code to integrate the filters? "string, toolbars, dialogs"

MPC + ffdshow for me (for x264 and all other movies or videos formats).

Maybe I'm a newbie but when I use VLC, I only get horrible subtitle. I tried to change subtitles options but i didn't get what I wanted.
