Nope, CCE Basic uses the MPEG Standard matrix and that's it....

for about $2000 you can get CCE SP and change the matrices and do extra passes... ;)

If CCE Basic cannot load custom quant matrices, how does DVD-Rebuilder apply them when using CCE-Basic?

Maybe this should go to the DVD-RB Forum.

It doesn't, they are ignored by CCE Basic. DVD-RB will add them (Matrix) to the .ecl file to be loaded into CCE Basic but it does nothing with them.

read the CCE Basic manual LINK (http://www.cinemacraft.com/files/doc/b2700107/eng/cct2.pdf), last page.... lists some of the diff's between Basic and SP

Thanks! I had never gotten that far in the manual before. Too bad, I guess if you want to change quant matrices you should just use HC.

I guess that statment in the manual is true:

"Cinema Craft Encoder Basic is not just a function limited version of Cinema Craft Encoder SP, but an independent product with a different concept."

CCE Basic is not just a limited version of SP. Don't get me wrong, it produces fantastic results and I will continue to use it. Too bad it is a limited version of SP.

Yes, the only thing really missing from CCE Basic is the ability to Change quantization matrices. Other encoders around CCE Basic's price offer that ability...well TMPGEnc does

i know this is a noob question (from a "quant matrix" noob):

why would i want to have custom quant matrices? i read through tons of threads about trellis quant, kvcd stuff, etc., but still don't understand what "quant matrix" means or what it does or what the numbers in those columns and rows mean. i'm sure this is a huge topic -- so i'm humbly asking for an enlightenment with some links or a "quick" explanation (if there is something like that).

It depends what you want to encode and what bitrate you use. Quant matrices are basically filters that help video compressibility by getting rid of detail determined by the values. Thats not a full detailed description but should be simple enough to give you the idea of what they are. The basically can help improve the encoding quality if the correct one is used. To get the result you want you can also use some scripts to get to it. Thats what KVCD and other templates is all about.

trust your own eyes to see what best is for you. If you want to try it out, encode a sample with the same settings around 2400 kbps using different quant matrices.
