I recently did an encode of severel 'Family guy' episodes (the DVDs are mine and no I didn't borrow them from Hitler and the evil filesharing Nazis), here are the settings I used:

Single Pass encoding at 700 bitrate. with an MPEG matrix, Qpel enabled, VHQ Mode 1 and motion search precision 6. I kept the original DVD.

The quality turned out to be quite bad. The resulting video file had some sort of motion lag. Movement get overlayed and they lag up for several frames, creates an effect as if the video is interlaced.

Secondly, the edges of various objects seem to have a glitter to the them.

Sadly, I can;t get any sceenshots, as I can't seem to take screenshots of the video in action.

My family guy DVD collection is region 2 if any has any experience with this sort of thing.

I'm not exactly confident in that but I think qpel was bad idea to set, also for 700 kbit, mpeg matrix may be little too much

You can't take screenshots, most likely, becouse your player has overlay renderer set. You can change them in media player classic on the output page in options.

As for picture lag, or ghosting I can't say, mayby your deinterlacing options were bad.

It's PAL, from NTSC, of course it looks bad. To fix try restore24 or Crestore. In fact, if I remember correctly, there was another thread on PAL family guy here a few months back, but I can't find it to see what the resolution was (except for some 2002 threads).

I don't understand from your post if you kept the original resolution. If not, remember to changing it (by cropping or resizing...chose what fits you better) into something in mod8. Also remember that a single pass at costant bitrate (and 700kbps at full res seems to be really low) is the worst choice possible to encode. It forces the codec to jump up and down with the quantizers in a weird way and often the result seems quite horrible! Anyway this has nothing to do with the deinterlace problems.

I am using the the original resolution.

Anyone have any clue whether the following changes will improve quality:

Disable Qpel
using 2pass encoding with 800 bitrate

Any other suggestions?

Hmm, I tried 2 pass encoding and that still didn't improve quality...

I recently used autoGK's 2 pass encoding (300mb target size) option to backup one of my DVD. CBR encoding didn't seem to work because all the motion is really laggy. Now 2 pass encoding seemed to work quite well except for this wierd half line on the top of the video.

Here is a sample:

autoGK uses Xvid 1.2 beta for dual core systems.

your resultion is bad. for one it's an odd number. Secondly it's not mod-16

and the "half line" is typical of some sources...

Care to elaborate on that? How can I modify the resolution when using 2pass encoding with autoGK. I'd love to do that, since autoGK always reduces the resolution of my video and I'd like to keep the original resolution.

Dont use AutoGK :)

At this point you need to learn how to write AviSynth scripts and do the encoding manually IMHO.

AutoGK is for basic "one click" style rips.

I've used AutoGK with Family Guy and gotten fairly good results, although I'm still ironing out the kinks. Anyway, use a Custom size of 200MB. Remember, Custom size automatically does a two-pass encoding, while Target quality only does one (you don't want that.) Also, in the Advanced Settings, I set a Fixed width of 720 and the audio was a VBR MP3 of 128. Also, use XVid to encode. Lastly, go to the hidden options (CTRL+F9) and Force cartoon mode and Force normal IVTC. Try it out and it should be more than sufficient. Good luck.

Hehe, you better smile when you say that. However, if foxyshadis is correct in saying they're bad NTSC2PAL conversions, then AutoGK won't be able to do it right.
...while Target quality only does one (you don't want that.)
And just why, pray tell, doesn't he want that? It's full VBR encoding, and a case can be made that, if it's not actually better than 2-pass encoding, it's easily as good. You just can't be particular about the final filesize when using target quality is all.
...Force normal IVTC.
End_of_Eternity said they're from R2 DVDs. So, unless they're Japanese R2s, you don't IVTC.

I also seem to remember something about the PAL Family Guy DVDs being victimized by a bad standards conversion. If true, only by following foxyshadis' advice will you get a decent encode out of them, although it'll never be as good as one you might make if the R1 DVDs were available to you. And I think she meant to say MRestore (or CDeblend), and not CRestore. Unless there's a new unblender in town with which I'm not familiar.

Shortly before posting that, CRestore was renamed CDeblend, then MRestore. I was just a little behind. ^.~

I guess we should all shout hallelujah, since this is a revival thread now. :p

That's exactly what I meant, just to clarify! AutoGK is great for your average backup, but for Pal(NTSC) -> NTSC work, it's not gonna happen!

Darn, I didn't even check the dates when responding. My fault. Most of this thread is over a year old. I didn't know the unblender had a name change along the way and apologize for correcting you, foxyshadis.

For fun I encoded a family guy episode and got it at 20mb, although admittedly it does look low bitrate, but others couldn't come close to its quality with other encoders...
