Does it make sense to take a 384Kbps 5.1 AC3 and reencode to HE-AAC at a lower bitrate? I used to keep the original AC3 for my home theater, but now that I've moved to x264 for video in MKV, I was wondering if there was any real benefit to reencoding my AC3's to AAC?

you can try to reencode it at 160kbps, it should still sound quite good.

You can use everything from 96-192kpbs and everything sounds amazing, newermind using new Nero encoder or Coding Tecnologies (winamp).
