Hello.
Do you remeber kludge?
Some years ago, syskin and mfc worked on it. It' s very intresting because kludge is "An educational video codec based on XviD, but not MPEG-4 compliant.". But development stopped.......
If you watch video on your pc if is not mpeg-4 compilant (no mpeg-4 limits) you can get more quality in the same file size, even if you can watch it only at your pc.
And if Kludge will use x264 instead of xvid?

ok, the rules say "be nice to each other" so i wont comment your post but kludge cant "use" x264... kludge is based on the xvid code and has almost nothing in common with x264.
I think he meant "will someone try to push h.264 out of the specs and see if we can gain something in quality or compression?"
That said, I don't know if it is a Good Idea™.

The one idea we've had is: Allow x264 to use a rangeocder instead of cabac. That should make playback significantly faster. And while rangecoder is not h264 compliant, a file could be losslessly converted back and forth.

convert rangecoder to cabac? :confused:

Sure. cavlc, cabac, and rangecoder all represent the same information. So hookup the bitstream parser from a decoder to the bitstream writer from an encoder, and you have a converter.
@sirber what is not clear?
Converting between two lossless compression schemes (like gz<->7z ;))

CAVLC is just a beefed up Huffman, right? In that case, Range Coding would be a significant advantage, and a quite interesting extension to the spec... if you could get the rest of the decoding world to co-operate. ;) For the prospect of reduced licensing fees (if arithmetic even has licensing fees anymore) and increased speed it might be worth it.

Syskin told this. If you search you' ll find it, but that thred was very very old. I' m not a programmer, so i don' t know if it' s possible... Hello
