Attempt to encode MPEG1 file always gets LARGER

I'm trying to use XVID (1.1.0) and VirtualDub 1.6.14 to encode an 800MB MPEG1 file. I've followed the instructions at http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/xvid-vdub-11.htm but the encoded file is always LARGER than the source. I've set the target size at 450000.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Try entering a bitrate. Google bitrate calculators, there are plenty avaiable, and figure out what bitrate you would need to achieve that size. Then enter that bitrate, and see if the resulting file corresponds to the needed size.

You may also want to uninstall and reinstall XviD - installing a newer version over an older one is a common cause for your problem.

What audio format are you converting to?

Good point, setarip_old. If you've managed to convert the audio accidently to WAV audio, then that could account for the bloated size. A newer version of GSpot should tell you what you have. Or post the GKnot log so we can have a look.
