Some of my backup DVDs do all the above during playback. Generally, it happens towards the end of the movie. One time it happened, in a fit of frustration, I went to the scene select & picked it up from there. It worked. I was able to finish the movie. I've only had the pixilation problem a couple of times & each time, I did the scene select & was able to finish the movies without any further problem. Can anyone tell me why the pixilating happens & why going to scene select works for me?

Hi!Generally, it happens towards the end of the movie. This is typically indicative of using poor quality media. two things you could try:
1) Use higher quality media
2) Compress you r DVD backup to a slightly smaller size (so that you're not burning data to the outermost extremities of the media)
You may also want to burn at a lower speed, typically not exceeding half the rated speed of the drive or media, whichever is lower.

Thank you both for your input. The disks that skipped were burnt over a year ago & I can't remember what type of media I used. Lately, I've been using Sony media. Any input on that media?
As far as speeds go, I only just recently realized that changing the speed when I burned was an option to me. I'll try changing it on my next backup.
The pixilation / skips seemed to happen on longer running movies. The longer the movie, the more the extremities of the media are used. Is that correct?
Again, thank you for the inputs.

The longer the movie, the more the extremities of the media are used. Is that correct? As a general rule, if you backup the movie only and use maximum compression.
Compress you r DVD backup to a slightly smaller size (so that you're not burning data to the outermost extremities of the media) What is the exact data density on the outer part of a dvd? How much empty space should one leave?
I burn only on dvd+ media, and I never allow movies/data to take more than 4460 MB. All dvds are being read without problem, so I guess I'll stick with that.
Just wondering, what size would you use/recommend.
agashead, a quick question since I just noticed the problematic disks were some you burned over a year ago: do they have labels on them? Paper labels shrink over time and cause the disk to warp. You can tell this if you take a new disk and an old, burned and labeled disk and hold them read-side together. They should touch at the edge. I thought of this after I pulled out a disk I burned probably two years ago and it quit with an error about halfway through. Remembering a post several months ago, I took a very sharp knife and scored the label many times, and the disk then played perfectly to the end.

I don't know if they're warpped or not. But, I'll check the next time it happens. Gee, I'd hate to have to rip the labels up.

Whoa! this is a good tip. Were you able to tell visually if the warping was better after scoring the label? I've been stripping labels from old discs each time I watch them again, but this would be a quick fix. Thanks.

Yes, I held the two disks face-to-face as before, and it wasn't perfectly flat as it should have been but it was much better. The best part was that the label is still fully intact and legible. I did quit labeling them several months ago when I discovered the problem.
