most wmv files that i play are playing back in weird pastel colors - bright pinks and yellows and blues. has anyone had this problem?
i just installed windows, media player classic, and the k-lite mega codec pack...

and the k-lite mega codec packHi!
Codec packs are known to cause all sorts of problems. I'd suggest you uninstall the codec "pack". Instead of installing a bunch of possibly unneeded codecs (some of which may be at the cause of your problem), start off by simply installing only the FFDShow filter/codec. It should handle most of your viewing needs...

Do other videos look the same when played in WMP, or just WMVs?

Lowering the merit of "WMVideo Decoder DMO" in the registry is the solution iirc...

WMP - try going to: tools > options > performance > advanced...
and try to uncheck some video acceleration settings, it solved the playback on my box (it's probably problem with colorspace handling)

Messed up colors are typically signs of video driver problem. Switching to a different decoder (ie ffdshow) might work around the problem by slightly alternating the playback pipeline, but it will not make the problem go away. I recommend you update your video card driver.
