Is there anyway I can IVTC this?
http://www.dvdscan.com/chaplin.htm
Normal IVTC doesnt work
There are progressive frames in it so it originated from FILM.
Deinterlacing makes it look horrible
What to do.

Can't you give a link to a short clip?

You really need to upload a sample vob somewhere, use something like ChopperXP (http://www.inchwest.com/digital-miner.com/chopperxp.html) or Cuttermaran (http://www.cuttermaran.de/Default.aspx?lang=en)for that. As for what to do, I suggest you to read Decomb's (http://www.neuron2.net/decomb/decombnew.html) readmes and tutorials and the IVTC tutorial (http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm). Those are a great source of starter knowledge and will explain things with detail.
As for your particular source, the original was most likely made at 18 or 20fps so I'd advice you to use TIVTC and one of its decimation methods, read its readme as well.

According to the site he linked, it was fieldblended into NTSC from new PAL masters (wow, did warner manage to screw that up or what?), so it's going to be a bit harder.... something like Crestore or Restore24 might be able to handle it if set up correctly, but it'll probably never be as sharp as the original.

Charley Chaplins movies (atleast modern and The great dictator) were meant to be seen at 24 FPS regardless of the original.
Ive read the readmes before. Im still clueless to this though. It seems all messed up.
Ill try those programs foxyshadis

Yes, Warner really did screw it up, by accepting the PAL masters foisted on them. It was a big scandal when they were released, and Warner has yet to apologize or even explain. The sound films will unblend nicely by using RePAL on them. If you're not experienced with this, RePAL's a heck of a lot easier to set up than the other 2 that were mentioned. I usually follow RePAL by a sharpener, such as LimitedSharpen.

That will give you 24.975fps. If you want to get them back to 23.976fps, then you'll also have to slow the audio.

Not really. There's an ancient thread by freiergeist that explains those movies were shot at a time where no standards existed. A reel of a given movie would play at different fps depending on the projector used, but the movies themselves were shot at varying speeds, and Chaplin movies were shot at 18 or 20fps, therefore that's the speed they are "meant" to be played at, all other speeds are artificial speedups/slowdowns.

Using REPAL just made it choppy as hell.

Yeah? What framerate did you get? And did you stick a SmartBobber in before the RePAL filter, as you're supposed to do?

Modern Times is from 1936 and The Great Dictator is from 1940. Both were shot at the sound speed of 24fps.

Yes, I did and I got 24.98 FPS.
However the film is choppy.

OK, my mistake, then. I usually have good luck with it with PAL2NTSC DVDs. If you have any trouble with the other functions suggested, you might post a clip, as requested before.

Hi-

Following that script above I got a perfect, unblended and smooth playing, XviD of that clip. That's not to say that it'll do the whole film perfectly, but I don't guess that any unblender is perfect:

http://rapidshare.de/files/19810484/TGD.avi.html

It's 4.12 MB in size. If your player has trouble with it, maybe try a different player. I was using Media Player Classic and VLC to test.

I got the CCCP playback setup so im good.
Anyway I will try this again when I have the time. I will report my results later.
(the AVI was fine)

Yes, Warner really did screw it up, by accepting the PAL masters foisted on them.

warner can't get anything right... the PAL stuff is converted from NTSC (my clockwork orange pulses every second because of some naff machine-based IVTC or something) and the NTSC is converted from PAL...

though how can you screw up a 25p to NTSC FILM transfer?? resize + slowdown + soft pulldown. if only everything i got was that easy... there should be no loss of sharpness whatsoever. seriously, that's so dumb.

undoing a conversion like this would probably be a matter of feeding the right numbers to restore24 i'd have thought. unless there's more blending going on than i thought (film transferred on old equipment perhaps? seems unlikely. NTSC to PAL to NTSC maybe? i've seen such things before and they made me want to puke).
