MPEG-1 file format

Hello ppl!

I searched for a "normal", readable MPEG-1 file format specification and have not succeed. ISO wants some MONEY?!, but i found some "free" papers describing MPEG technology - ISO 11172(http://www.chiariglione.org/mpeg/standards/mpeg-1/mpeg-1.htm). It seemed very complicated to me. I'm not mpeg spec and just want some general file format description. If anybody knows usefull links please post them here..

ISO 11172 is the specification for MPEG1, so that is the definitive source of information about the format. Yes, it is complicated.

For more general information you can consult books, such as Video Demystified. What general information, specifically, were you seeking?

I want to parse .mpeg file and extract information about video and audio streams, other words, container info is needed.

"Video Demystified" describes MPEG1, it's cool and i'm going to read it.

I like "The MPEG Handbook" by John Watkinson, however it covers more than just the file format (ie it also explains the compression techniques used in a general manner) and is a bit, mm, seems more targeted at electro engineers than programmers.
