Umm.. My last post Worked:)

So I was right about Matroska!

But My next problem of choosing the Codec

I am Using XviD right now! But hoping for a change after getting this poll results!

I dont care for hardware compatibility! But it should give me maximum quality!

x264 all the way for me :)... I'm always willing to try new codecs. I'm specially waiting for the implementation of VC-1 and news from Real.

In near past i always use XviD, now using x264, but wait for XviD AVC. Sometimes use XviD when i need both speed and quality. I Vote for XviD

MPEG-4 ASP for everything, quantizer of 1, insane mode (DivX 6.2.2), native mux to mkv.

Can't see how x264 can be an option though. It is an encoder only.

1) Nero Digital
2) x264
3) Xvid

Nero Digital all the way!!!

kurt
2nd May 2006, 22:41
still XviD - as long as I don't get another (faster) machine :D

then x264 would be my choice :p

Which forum should it be? General?

Hi,

For maximum SAP compatibility (would like to state 100% but this is utopic :) ) Divx
Now for SAP compatibility AND quality: XVID; my choice :D

My bad

But Why did the thread starter (NeD tHe OnE) made xvid choice available in the poll? => His bad ?

XviD is the best encoder/decoder combo in my opinion.
x264 got my vote, though it's encoder only as others pointed out. It would be great if there was a decoder included with x264. CoreAVC is payware now and I can't shake the feeling that FFDShow is overkill when all I want is something free to decode h264 content...XviD AVC encoder may be a ways off, but what about decoding? hmm....

RV11 did a better job than x264 in Anime encoding?

You'll have to ask Real's engineers, since no one else has ever seen RV11. ;)

Can any one help me to find this "MeGUI-x264_generic_profiles_v24.zip" thats by Sharktooth.. the site's down I cant get it .. Plz can any one email to this "nedtheone@msn.com" .. I need it bad PLZ! with the guide to choose the specific profile for a single cd's or 2,3 ...

ic... I though it already happened as I see some website posting rumors that RV11 is already available. :p

[edit]
Ohh... I've over looked RV11 & Producer11... :p
Not only me, some ppl also did the same. Real's fault.

Sirber

Real's fault. :devil:I still blame you! ;)

Yeah, most people think Producer 11 include RealVideo 11. Dunno why they left Producer 10...

"MPEG" is kind of a confusing option considering XviD, x264, NeroDigital AVC, DivX, Nerodigital ASP, 3ivX and HDX4 all are MPEG impementations oO

It would be great if there was a decoder included with x264No, it'd be useless : libavcodec's h264 decoder has been mainly written by fenrir and pengvado/akupenguin, which were/are the main developper of x264. So it can be considered as the decoder part of x264.

I can't imagine using a PC on windows without FFDShow, mplayer or vlc, and all of them use libavcodec, so I can't imagine a PC without that h264 decoder.

Finally, since h264's decoding is bitexact, the decoder doesn't matter for the visual impression ( it only matters for speed ).

More on the topic, since I think x264 fully qualifies, I'm voting for it.

WtF? How the heck is an AVC/ASP codec an MPEG implementation?

ASP is a profile of MPEG-4 Part 2
AVC is MPEG-4 Part 10

I use x264 by the way.

x264 baby . It's not relegious but highest compression/quality/future standard choise.

Oh okay now I get it. I though he was referring to MPEG-1/2 by MPEG.

x264

reasons:
- based on new AVC codecs standard
- fast & stabile dev.
- OpenSource (free)
- realy very good quality
- quite well support

Really ? I didn't know it.
Any links or topics about this ?

Since during the encoding / decoding process, the encoder / decoder use the already encoded-then-decoded frames to make the temporal compensation, the decoding process must be bitexact ( because else, during the decoding, the compensation is done with a different picture than during the encoding, so small errors occur, and these errors will add up between two keyframes and become blatantly visible )

Such a statement should be true for all codecs based on temporal prediction ( ie, all mpeg codecs, wmv, real video, vp6, theora, snow, whatever... ).

However, it's not exactly true for mpeg1/2/4 asp codecs, because the designers of the standard decided to allow for very small imprecisions in some part of the decoding process - namely, the IDCT part, which is the cause of the dreaded DCT drift that can be observed sometimes with some mpeg4 codecs ( a tendency to have color drifts for example ). These imprecisions disappear as soon as you use the IDCT algorithm used during the encoding - which FFDShow / ffmpeg attemps to do as much as possible, because it implements several different IDCT algorithm and can choose from them, according to what IDCT it thinks the real codec used - that's partly why FFDShow / FFMpeg are great.

Now, the designers of the AVC standard had enough time to understand the mess that was created with the previous codecs, and decided to come back to reason by forcing people to use a unique IDCT algorithm in the AVC codec. This little change implies that all decoders must output the same result from the same video source.

So video quality can't be used to judge AVC decoders. However, other things matter : decoding speed ( CoreAVC ), implemented tools - not all decoders implement the complete AVC standard ( actually, none, but the missing features often don't matter, since no encoder supports them either ) - postprocessing filters ( in that regard, it's hard to beat FFDShow )

I assume you mean postprocessing other than deblocking in deringing? As I understand it using that kind of pp can be quite harmful on AVC. Well at least last time I tried with ffdshow it was. Perhaps this was because ffdshow uses ASP quantizer mapping scheme to deblock and dering though, which would be really bad for AVC I guess (as high quality AVC would be ~q18). :)

My vote goes to x264 too. :)

foxyshadis
5th May 2006, 00:47
The ASP quantization in the PP is pretty lame, hopefully eventually they're restructure it for AVC quants, and set it to automatically activate only when inloop was disabled in the source. (Maybe a force mode for when someone used -6:-6, but...) Then no confusing and pointless h264 mode dropdown in ffdshow's PP. I guess they haven't done it because almost everyone uses inloop with normalish settings.

I voted Dirac & Snow. I'm really interested in non-MPEG(regular OR Microsoft) codecs.

definitly x264. Can be as fast as XviD and still give a far better visual quality. B)

(that doesn't mean I'm not always encoding with the slowest settings.. ;) )

Still XviD, as I mainly do high bitrate encodes! ^^

Yes, but some people argue that x264 displays an advantage over xvid in high bitrates as well. Test your content in these two codecs and see if there is a difference.

sticking with Xvid since smooth playback of 720p AVC files is not quite possible on this Celeron M 370 1.5G.

I can barely play 1280x720 Xvid only with all pp turn off.

Did you try CoreAVC?

darkavatar1470

might be a good idea,
I was quite busy when it came out and sort of forgot it.

now where can I get one without encoding them myself....

CoreAVC is awesome! I use it for Decoding AVC files, It gives perfect preview quality, No need for me to use ffdshow!

Y didnt i allow people for multiple choices? Because I am way over with XviD! x264 on the way!

All those 'new formats', like Snow, aren't for me, they're not good enough yet. And I wouldn't use codecs I have to pay for either, like ND and RV.

So the choice is between DivX, XviD and x264.
At higher bitrates x264 is merely slower, not better.
XviD gives better objective quality in Doom9's tests, but when subjectively comparing, I prefer DivX's smoothness over XviD's sharpness.

DivX for me.

I have to note that I mostly encode HD material, for SD material another codec might have my preference.

while the new wmv9 advanced codec isn't the absolute best at compression it is pretty close to the others now. The best part is that it can be played on any Windows XP machine with an automatic codec download. Now you can stream your content to a novice user and you don't have to explain to them how to download and install a codec. To me that is a huge plus.

Here is the Harry potter film clip done in the new WMV9 advanced profile.
