What's the difference between:
Audio: mpa vs. mp2
Video: mpv vs. mpg
In regard to elementary streams.

These are simply different filename extensions. Different applications use different extensions for elementary streams.

Actually, "MPG" is used to designate a multiplexed (video/audio) file - either MPEG1 or MPEG2.
An alternative extension to "MPV" for a videostream is "M2V"...
