Recode has a bunch of new features:

I read this over at HA.org:

Note that Recode still uses the old encoder, because of the above issue, but also because the Recode team had to choose between integrating the new one or fixing more bugs. They fixed more bugs.

With the 'above issue' I believe he refers to the 'problematic 5.1 channel VBR'.

Ah well, I guess a 'bugfree' release is worth waiting for...

I thought Nero 7 was a great purchase. It has the burning software, and the video and audio editors and encoders, and so many more features. Its great!

it is a resource hog. I hate it's media library functions and it's encoders are sub par. The only think I like is the burning software and Showtime for DVD's.

Ive been wondering how I can get rid of Nero - I only use it for burning really. Im going to try imgburn given it can pluginto dvdshrink and is extending the work done in dvddecrypter

The AVC, with psychovisual enhancements, still manage to provide certain (facial) detail that others cannot. Recall, however, that x264 had to work very hard to catch up to it in the first place, though it has since surpassed it by metrics and general concensus.

The new aac audio encoder featured in this new bundle, however, is at the top of its class (pop over to hydrogenaudio to affirm this), and imo isn't topped by any other aac codec in quality (even features 2-pass mode in CLI).

So to generalize by claiming "subpar" performance is going just a bit overboard I believe... :)

Wrong. New encoder wasn't tested yet.
It has to be ABX tested. I think that Itunes LC-AAC from 96 kbps and higher can be still slightly better.

So don't say afirmativly anything.

My good friend, isn't your use of "Wrong." an affirming enough statement? :) I said the encoder is at the top of its class, based on results from the previous encoder's test and preliminary results from guruboolez indicating that the older encoder's most prominent issues were resolved. I also stated that the encoder, "imo" (an shortened form of the phrase "in my opinion") wasn't topped by other AAC codecs. Thus, I'm not "saying afirmativly anything." In fact, I was commenting about how people shouldn't affirmatively claim subpar performance ;)

With 7.2.0.3b i have no more options when i save AAC with 'Nero Wave Editor'. Just a kbit/s slider now, no more HE/LC profile selection, PSNR on/off and all those bells and whistles... How is it meant to be done now?

Yes DTS, I should clarify that I was referring to video, not audio. I use Nero's AAC freebie and am very happy with it for mp4 audio.

My preliminary tests are... very preliminary ;)
Some flaws are indeed solved, but if you take a look on my previous evaluation (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=38792) at ~130 kbps you should notice that Nero AAC had in a recent past a significant handicap. Therefore, even with these recent and audible progress, I wouldn't make any statement about a possible superiority of Nero AAC. My preliminary tests also quickly revealed some annoying issue iTunes AAC don't have (with harpsichord mostly, but my experience is telling me that I'm most sensitive with distortions occuring with this instrument than most people).

Anyway, my preliminary "tests" were performed at ~130 kbps only and they don't prejudge something about different bitrate.

You can load SRT subtitles. You can set the color, font, charset, size position. But... no black outline for the subtitles. I hope some day they will realise that subtitles need black outline. :mad:
Also an option to maximize the subtitles preview window can be a good thing.
These type of subtitles can be displayed on standalone (mp4box subtitles can't).

Mtzmp4box has some new feature implemented with vobsub support and it played fine in Nero ShowTime.

I have many standalones with "Nero Digital" support, but the subtitles are displayed only if the MP4 is made with Recode.
Let's suppose that I'm doing something wrong (I can see subtitles in VLC, but no in showtime): give me some samples made by some experienced user in various modes to test them in my standalones.
Another interesting thing in standalone:
movie.mp4 (without subtitle inside it)
movie.srt
I can see the external .srt subtitle. :D So for me is not "a must" to have internal subtitles, but I can test for compatibility with standalones with MTK chipsets.
