I've been trying to get Quicktime (on a non-Intel Mac) to recognize the
video track from a H264 Matroska-file (http://shinsen.b33r.net/%5BShinsen-Subs%5D_Ergo_Proxy_-_01_%5BH264_AAC%5D%5BCAE926E9%5D.mkv.torrent to be exact). Matroska says it's CodecID is 'V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC', but Quicktime refuses to open it.
Anyone any suggestions?

Try to remux it to Matroska. You might have to extract audio and video to raw formats and remux them with mp4box.

and even then it probably uses AVC features that QT doesn't support.
