Please watch this clip

http://www.filanthropy.com/alea/videos/2.mp4

notice the blockiness in the upper right corner at the kill msgs. i used the HQ-Insane preset at 3200 bitrate. I've also tried many custom matrices. Any ideas on how I can eliminate some of the upper right blockiness? I guess one way would be to up the bitrate but 3200 seems pretty high as it is.

:search:

I'm downloading the clip just in case, but blockiness isn't a new problem and many solutions are provided in the forum.

such as :
1) adding slight noise (avisynth filter or ffdshow's processing capabilities)
2) using the --no-fast-pskip switch
3) using Adaptative Quantization (available in ChronoCross' builds)
or all 3 of these suggestions. AQ isn't the same as in XviD, here it is designed to fight blocs, not diminish quality where eye can't notice. Do note that AQ has been revised so many times that depending of the revision and build you use you will observe different results.

Search for "blockiness" and you might be a happy man :)

* small red or blue text can't look good in yv12, even before compression.
* text overlays screw both motion compensation and intra prediction, leaving them coded entirely by dct.

That doesn't help fix anything, just saying.

thanks for the info :) i'll try some of those options. is there any specific thread about the AQ? i wouldn't mind seeing a guide if one exists.

Just watched the clip, I'm afraid you can't do much about that ...

AQ "would" be your last resort, if ever it would work (which I'm not even sure about) ... I have no idea about how it works though ... just that you have a threshold and a strength for it :)
