How to Backup your protected OLD VHS' with your ATI ALL-IN-WONDER Card
WITHOUT cracks, patches or other hardware

In the process to capture Closed Captioning I ran into this by accesadent :)


You need:

ATI ALL-IN-WONDER x800 XT (Other versions may work)

Catalyst 5.9 + WDM (http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/ATI/ATI-Catalyst-59.shtml) (Other older versions may work, 6.1 to courrent 6.3 will have a different layout)

GraphEdit (http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm#filters) (can be downloaded at Doom9)


Check that your VCR is connected to your ATI ALL-IN-WONDER card.

# Start GraphEdit. Under the Graph menu, select Insert Filters, then insert all of the following:

____* Under WDM Streaming TV Tuner Devices, select the "ATI TV Tuner" filter.
____* Under WDM Streaming TV Audio Devices, select the "ATI TV Audio" filter.
____* Under WDM Streaming Crossbar Devices, select the "ATI TV Audio Crossbar" filter.
____* Under WDM Streaming Crossbar Devices, select the "ATI Rage Theater Video Crossbar" filter.
____* Under WDM Streaming Capture Devices, select the "ATI Rage Theater Video Capture" filter.
____--
____* Under Video Compressors, select the Codec(s) of your choices.
____--
____* Under DirectShow Filters, select the "AVI Mux"
____* Under DirectShow Filters, select the "File writer",
enter a location and Filename (must be an avi file ex. vhsbackup.avi)



To create an application, you will now connect the filters (the boxes in GraphEdit) to each other to pass data down the line. To connect two boxes, position the pointer in an output pin (one of the bumps on the right-hand side of a box) and drag to an input pin (a left-hand bump on another box). If the two filters cannot be connected, you will get a cryptic error message--try closing and re-opening GraphEditor and if this and a reboot doesn't work, then it's possible the card just doesn't want to do what you want. To configure a filter, right-click it and select "Filter Properties". Your goal is something like this

Note: "Alparysoft Lossless Codec" is a example. By default your system will not have this codec.


NOTE: DO NOT CONNECT ANYTHING TO THE CAPTURE PIN ABOVE THE PREVIEW PIN IN "ATI Rage Theater Video Capture",
IF YOU DO IT WILL ACTIVATE THE PROTECTION.


Now we need to start configuring

____* Right-click "ATI TV Tuner" and select "Filter Properties"
In "TVTuner Property Page" tab Check your "Video Standards"
If you using your tuner enter your VCR channel [3 or 4].

____* Right-click "ATI TV Audio" and select "Filter Properties"
Check to see if Stereo is selected.

____* Right-click "ATI TV Audio Crossbar" and select "Filter Properties"
In the crossbar tab under "Output" Select your audio input type.

____* Right-click "ATI Rage Theater Viedo Crossbar" and select "Filter Properties"
In the crossbar tab under "Input" Select your video input type.

____* Right-click "ATI Rage Theater Video Capture" and select "Filter Properties"
In "Video Decoder" tab Check your "Video Standards"
In "Video Proc Amp" tab you can adjust your Brightness, Contrast and other stuff.

____* Adjust the "Filter Properties" of your Codec(s).

Note: There will be no preview for you to watch due to that we are using the preview pin to capture.
Advanced users can use preview (This may cause frameloss and should only be used for debugging.)
(a)DirectShow Filters -> "Infinite Pin Tee" Filter. For Video it must be added between the "Preview" pin and your codec.
(b)DirectShow Filters -> "Infinite Pin Tee" Filter. For Audio it must be added between "Capture" pin (Under PCM Capture) and "AVI Mux".
(c)Then right-click on the extra pin from "Infinite Pin Tee" and click "Render Pin". (Repeat for both "Infinite Pin Tee")

Now test your work on normal video, click on the green play button let it record for a few seconds then click the red stop button to stop recording and Preview your avi in your media player to see if it's working.

If all goes well do a test recording of your protected VHS.
And if all goes well again then record your VHS then convert it to DVD.

Unless I'm missing something (and it wouldn't be the first time ;>} ), how about simply:

1) Video/Audio source out to capture card video/audio in

2) Use VirtualDub or VirtualVCR to capture

???

If you do that you would not be able to capture the protected (macrovision) VHS.
Also this will capture anything macrovision protected.

I've had my VCRs connected to a "little blackbox" (eliminates Macrovision) for so many years, that I've forgotten it's there ;>} And on another secondary setup (Win98), my old "ASUS Live Video!" software simply ignores Macrovision...

i was looking at a device from ads and a filiter.or mabe some of you could let me in on other devices.dont mind spending the money if it works.

In this thread, Chronomaster shows a very specific set of steps in order to capture macrovision protected analog video using an ATI brand VIVO card, the "All in Wonder" series of products.

There are many capture devices. Some do not have trouble with macrovision, and some do.

Please ask a specific question if you want a specific answer. And as for "ports" -- on analog capture cards and devices, these are typically composite video (RCA socket) , s-video (DIN socket), and stereo audio (3.5mm phono socket).

I use my Lite-On LVW-5005 Standalone DVD Recorder for backing up my VHS tapes, works real good on the Disney Tapes and others with Macrovision. It's also great for movie only backups of DVD's that are scratched and can't be backed up /ripped in a PC. There is a MV hack for these for these recorders.

Question: What Catalyst version do you have? What OS do you have?

Tip: Use the preview feature of iuVCR (www.iulabs.com) to see if the video plays or not.
