I would be most grateful if somebody could point me to where I might find some MPEG-2 Layer 3 samples please?

Cheers

Hi SMD,

Lame can do that easily...:) All samples with a Sampling Rate between 16KHz & 24 KHz are MPEG-2 and lower than 16 KHz this is MPEG-2.5.

That's encouraging...

Do you know if there is a plug-in for Foobar 2000 v0.9.0?

foobar supports natively mp3 encoding with Lame.

I must be blind.... I can't find it :scared:

Is it a command-line encoder?

Yes it is, open foobar and go File->Preferences then you should get this window.

When preferences openend go to Tools->Converter[1] than you should select MP3 (LAME), ~190kbps (V2), fast and go to edit button[2], You get new window and then use [3] and switch to Custom.

You enter in fileds like in picture, you must point to lame.exe, and instead in parameters put like in picture, if you using -b 56 you get mpeg2, i think is -b 64 max, other than 64kbs is mpeg1

Jeez.... I must be completely loosing it...

I totally forgot that MP3Pro audio files are encoded using MPEG-2 Layer 3 :o

No, it isn't...File --> Preferences --> Converter then choose MP3 (Lame) xxxxx and click on Edit to select the appropriate bitrate.

To encode: right click on the playlist then convert --> convert to...

and btw, if we talk about the same thing, MP3Pro isn't a MPEG-2 stream.

Yep... I'm really confused

You have this message because you use "custom" encoder in the drop-down list. But as I said previously, by choosing "MP3 (Lame)" directly, you will be able to select a bitrate with the slider.

However, if you prefer to use command line encoder (through custom choice) then I suggest Lame 3.97 beta 2.

Ok, right...I stand corrected. mp3PRO is an mpeg-2 layer 3 stream. Sorry for the confusion.

(mp3pro is not officially part of the mp3 specs, so matter if mpeg-1 and mpeg-2)

as i get it the only difference between mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 mp3 is multichannel support, no?

+ sampling-rate restriction.

MPEG1 audio is 48, 44.1 and 32 kHz with possible bitrates ranging from 32 to 448 kbps. (for layer III the max is 320 kbps, if free format is not taken into account)

MPEG2 audio is 24 kHz, 22.05 and 16 kHz with possible bitrates ranging from 16 to 256 kbps (for layer III the max is 160 kbps).

It makes perfect sense that an MP3Pro stream is shown as MPEG2, because halving the sampling rate of the stream is part of how SBR works. And while MP3Pro is not part of the MPEG audio specification it is certainly backwards compatible.

Even when I choose "MP3 (Lame)" directly, Foobar2000 v0.9.0 still want's me to navigate and find "lame.exe".

Currently I don't have any version of Lame installed in my PC.

:o :o :o Well, Well, Well....:helpful: So, I suppose you don't have this ?

I think I should provide you some samples...it might be easier, isn't it ? :D

Yes... I see all those windows...

but as soon as I try to generate an encode... I see this: -

... That said... as I'm not up to speed with Lame, I would not know a good quality audio encode from a bad one :scared:
