i have a standalone philips dvd player that is pretty good about playing just about anything i can burn to a cd or dvd. anything i make in linux with transcode (xvid, xvid4, etc.) won't play, though (plays fine in software players, xine, mplayer, vlc, etc. i mean, just not the standalone player). i don't know a lot about authoring, etc. i just want to be able to play the avi files i make in linux from the vobs i ripped. can anyone help?

>> edit: avis still not working, but i switched to mpeg and from xvcd to svcd, and now a test mpeg is working. just have to adjust the sizes, etc. great forum, i have some reading to do. :D

Hi!

Try creating/burning DivX-compressed .AVIs, rather than XviD-compressed .AVIs...

it maybe connected with avi header. try to remux your files in VDM (in DirectStreamCopy mode)

i'll try those suggestions. the mpeg quality is really bad, with blocky pixelation all over the place, crappy looking subtitles, the letterboxing like 90% on the bottom, 10% on top, and sound dropouts every 4-5 seconds on one dvd. i have no idea what i'm doing wrong, i'm using dvd::rip, and all the options seem pretty straightforward.

is VDM a software program?

>>edit: i get an error message when i try to use divx4 or divx5, the only 2 divx codecs listed in the dialog. i'm trying again with ffmpeg as it suggests at the bottom.

>>edit2: okay ffmpeg/mpeg4 seems to be giving pretty nice results so far, based on just the test clip. *much* nicer than the mpeg encodings, and about 10+ times faster than using the xvids. those were taking 6 or more hours just for a single pass, on a 2GHz athlon. the full movie with ffmpeg looks like will take about 45 minutes.

i get an error message when i try to use divx4 or divx5Do you have these codecs installed on your system?

Do you have these codecs installed on your system?

yes, i have the arch linux divx4linux package. apparently divx is incompatible with transcode, though, from the error message. maybe it would work with mencoder, but i don't know how to use that yet.

xvid sort of works for just making vids for the computer, but often there are sync issues, and it takes a lot of processor to make them (10+ hours for two passes!). i guess the problem with my player is that it just can't read xvid, because i have plenty of divx encoded movies from the net that work fine. ffmpeg with mpeg4 is giving really nice results though, so for now i guess i will just stick with that until transcode gets its act together. i hope support for that in linux doesn't "go away" any time soon, or i'll be screwed! :scared:

Are you able to play such files on your standalone (with audio)?

yes, so far they work fine -- audio, subs, high IQ, everything. the S/VCD mpegs look awful, and the xvid avis don't even work, but the mpeg4 with ffmpeg look really nice, great quality. is that out of the ordinary?

is that out of the ordinary? What's the audio format of these files?

starcycle

the ffmpegs? mp3. the xvids are mp3 too, come to think of it. but there's a choice to encode to ac3. i usually just choose mp3, though.

I was asking about the audio because my Philips DVP 642/37 plays .MP4s, with .AAC audio, silently...

that's the player i have. i've never tried encoding to AAC or mp4, though (i've got enough troubles already :p).

some divx/xvid features are often unplayable on standalone players. qpel comes to mind - make sure you have qpel turned off and give that a shot.

I never had a problem with my XviD avi files.
Am using MEncoder + xvid codec for avi.

I have given up on standalone players though. the computer is always more realiable and i dont have to cater to his needs much (computers are flexible)

I'd wish for an easy way to view content on a hdd to a TV, but as long as this aint easy, I am only watching video files on my computers.
