About x264 M.E. Algorithm and Subme

This is maybe stupid question but i want to clear something it is that same:

x264___________XviD

-subme1________VHQ1
-subme2________VHQ2
-subme3________VHQ3
-subme4________VHQ4
-subme5________VHQ4+VHQB

So i am now encode one movie with -subme 1 and -me dia and i get very good quality and much better than XviD but speed is same as XviD. When i encode to XviD i newer use than VHQ1 becouse is not improve much quality. I think why x264 uses RDO when is not much better quality, RDO helps with very low bitrate. And what about M.E algorithm in XviD i think XviD uses diamond. So correct me if i am wrong and please explane me that things. Thanks

vhq1-4 = rdo = subme 6-7

still, without knowing the internals, i would assume that you cant compare the two codec's modes that easily

You right, i only wanna know how is good subme 1, becouse have big gain in speed and no such bad quality
